I've had my 'stache since I was 18. That was back in 1980. Of course for 20 years (Air Force) it was kept very trim. When I retired, think Magnum PI. I've had my 'bars for about five years now, and I don't recall all the hype, popularity, fascination, what ever you want to call it, with the handlebar mustache back then. Anyone have any clue as to when and why there's a handlebar 'stache every where one looks these days?
No idea buddy, but it was probably the same idiots who think puckering up like a duck for pictures is sexy? What is this world coming to?
From askmen.com http://www.askmen.com/fashion/trends_500/553_hipster-trends-we-hate.html Handlebar moustaches A hop, skip and a jump away from screaming “please, please look at me,” a handlebar moustache is an undeniable way to make sure you stand out in a crowd; though, unfortunately, it likely won't bring you the kind of attention you're craving. Neither will the equally shameful chevron or garibaldi. After all, to the fairer sex, a thick moustache is the equivalent of having a bad pickup line on your face, so, consider sporting these styles only when you’ve decided to embark on one of your celibacy chapters. To use your masculinity to attract rather than repel women, try a facial hair style like an all-over stubble (the five o’clock shadow kind) or shave it all off and let her see what you’re working with. Oh, well. I like my 'stache, my wife likes my 'stache. And she hates the way stubble gives her whisker burn (one of the reasons I shave every day ). Ain't nobody else I gotta please.
Had a nice run in a new-to-me area. Does anyone know what this really tall bird is? Sorry the cell pics are basically a silhouette, since the light against the water was bright... The body was light gray & the beak was narrow rusty orange. I looked up some stork pictures, but they had wider bills (& some were carrying babies )
Of course, that could be wrong. After all. below the picture of a Whooping Crane was this seriously. google it.
Bwaaaa! Must be the South Georgia Island penguins. Haha. We're in North Carolina right now. I think you're right about the whooping crane. Thanks! It was shocking to see such a tall bird. He was beautiful, but very full of himself (which is how I know it was a dude )...Looked right at me, not at all scared, & I could have sworn I heard, "What are you lookin' at?! Keep it moving, shorty" Edit: with the distance & sun, I can't estimate the height accurately. I'm going back with a better camera & taller back up
http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/968/_/Common_Crane.aspx Maybe a juvenile Common Crane? Whatbird.com has a bird identifier - you indicate characteristics and it suggests candidates. Or could be a Great Blue Heron http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/31/_/Great_Blue_Heron.aspx
Great site, thanks! The habitat and color range make a lot of sense for the Great Blue Heron. I will go back this afternoon & try to get closer. Will report back. Holy crow penguin! That's huge. I read that Shackleton's shipwrecked men ate penguins & I imagined them chasing around little Chilly Willys, not mahoosive beasts.
How inconsiderate of me! My apologies to Edmund. By all accounts the men were poor hunters & very thin when they returned to England.
Ding ding ding! We have an ID. There were no birdies when we went back, but locals tell us that they are Great Blue Herons (height up to 4.5 ft & wingspan up to 6.5 ft) ... Excellent detective work, Erik! You've earned 2 points, bringing you back to the plus side (after subjecting us to Nickelback music)
I'll have to find another tryptophobia video to put me back on the dark side, the dark side is stronger.
