The iconic Old Spice shaving mugs & bottles have a special place in many shave dens. Whether holding modern soap, vintage juice or a bit of both (a la Van der Spice ), OS gear is an instantly recognizable feature of many SOTD & collection threads. What's currently in your OS mug(s) and/or bottles? (Or what have they housed in the past?) Do you have a favorite OS style or era?
Currently? Old Spice soap. I've experimented some with replacements cuz I can't keep buying old pucks forever. I'm pulling the same with the aftershave. I'm sure the "new" is fine but I just like the glass. Waaaay back (1967), I started with Old Spice and now it's an expensive treat.
I have three OS mugs ranging from the early 40's hull pottery to mid 70's vintage. One of the newer ones was my fathers and it still houses his puck of Williams that I use sparingly. Other than that, I have a puck of IK in one and am waiting for Prairie Creations Walter's shave soap to arrive for the empty one. The only problem with the mugs is they tend to break in many little pieces when dropped.
I'm a great lover of all things "Old Spice"....every period....I especially love the Classique Cologne, but all the AS's I dig aswell...
I recently got my first OS mug. It looks like this first pic in this thread & has Shulton stamped on bottom. I feel soooo legit now . Not sure who'll live in it yet. OS Factoid: "The first Old Spice product was intended for women, introduced in 1937" -Wikipedia
I have a couple dozen OS mugs, here's what's in a couple of them. The one on the left is one of my Ship Grand Turk mugs, the first model that was produced by Hull Pottery. Next to it is a Ship Friendship, the second one they made.
I have two mugs(sorry no pics)...Both have Shulton on the bottom. Both are just too nice to use for fear of damage(chipping/dropping),plus Ziploc small containers work so well for holding soaps, with no worry about hurting them....One mug is normal sized and has no ship name on the side, just the picture..The other mug is about a 1/3 of an inch shorter and has pictures of two ships one on either side..One ship is called "Ship Grand Turk-Salem-1786" the other "Ship Recovery-Salem-1794"....
Here's one that I picked up awhile back. I have four of the Morning Refresher coffee mugs that I use at home and at work. Scored this set for $3 at a yard sale, the brush was still sealed in it's original plastic bag. This one is interesting. It was NOS, still in the original box with a puck of soap, but it managed to leave the factory without the graphics being applied to the mug. I've wondered how many others were shipped that way and returned to the store by the original purchasers?
Sweet. Sure wish I was as lucky to find a nice set-up like that at a yard sale. I bet that whistling sailor on the dock with his ditty bag over his shoulder from the old OS commercials must have been smiling on you that day.
No mugs, but have been a user of Old Spice for quite a few years. It's my wife's favorite. Wish I would have thought to keep the old bottles. Pay no attention to the can 'o cream. Those days are now over, thanks to you guys and gals
When dating my mug, I came across this wonderful site about Old Spice Mugs & Collectibles Oh yes, I'm a necessary fan of the unbreakable soap dish . I really dig the ones with ship names. It sounds like your short mug was the last in the series This is my mug:
Wonderful pieces, Tom! It's always a treat to see your gear & read about your killer vintage finds. ... The unstamped NOS mug is very interesting. In the wild & without the box, I might have assumed that the stamp had worn off. Very cool!
Love the mugs, have two or three now. Have given a few away over the years. Hate the scent of the stuff.
Thanks. My old one is 1938-41 The Grand Turk, My other two are the 1964 to 78 ones. Me two. Like the mugs, but not the scent. Unfortunately the mug you gave me slipped out of my hands and broke in to many little pieces.
Good thing the mugs are not rare! I can buy them by the fistfull in Plant City for less than five bucks each! I shall send you another!
I love the Old Spice Mugs. I have a few different ones, and they all have different soaps grated into them. TSD ISZ, Godrej (the blue one, only hard soap from India), De Vergulde Hand, Caswell Massey, Dragonfly Goats Milk, Art of Shaving.
