My new Georgetown Pottery G5 scuttle just arrived - SEVEN weeks after ordering it!!! The people at GP were courteous and responsive to my queries throughout the wait though. To show their gratitude for my patience they gave me the nice pewter stopper which normally comes with their G20 scuttle. After confirming that it'd arrive two weeks ago (week 5) a production problem delayed it two more weeks. The advertised three to five weeks is a long time to wait but seven weeks seemed interminable! The G5 is a really nice scuttle though and I'm happy with the purchase. The quality of craftsmanship is evident and the glaze/coloring is beautiful. I tried it out this AM and it worked great. The lather stayed nice and warm but heat generated from the almost boiling H2O caused the lather in the bowl to break down a bit. However, the lather that was on the brush kept its proper consistency. I'll have to fiddle around with adjusting the water temp. One criticism is that the lip which is designed to keep lather from overflowing from the bowl could be a little more pronounced. Evidently my G5 is one of the last that GP is sending out as they are discontinuing the model. It will be replaced by another design that they said will be easier to make. Hopefully the new model will have a shorter lead time!
I had the wonderful pleasure of picking up mine in their Freeport studio, Maine, while on my way up to visit my folks. Very cool they gave you the pewter stopper.
Thanks. I'd love to see GP's main facility. I think the pewter stopper adds so much to the look of the scuttle. I guess that occasionally there's a benefit to being patient and polite when something goes wrong!
Great scuttle and a nice-looking corner you've got there! After the runaway success of my first ever cold-water shave this morning, I'd be tempted to put ice water and a couple cubes into that thing on a hot day and see what that's like. I already know that I like hot lather on cool days so it's probably just a matter of time until I end up with a scuttle. And the Georgetown stuff like yours is top of my list. Very nice.
Thanks! I've thought about cold water shaving after reading several posts praising the results but can't seem to bring myself along.
Very nice. I thought about buying one for my dad. Right now he just uses an old coffee mug to mix his lather. It doesn't matter to me, I'm a face latherer.
Thanks. That's a terrific gift idea and I'm sure he'll love it. If you plan on getting one of these, bear in mind that GP is redesigning the G5. I'm not sure they'll continue to refer to it as a G5 but you should contact them to inquire about availability.
I have a GP G20 scuttle. Hate it for the following reasons: -my wife loves the look of it -keeps lather too damn hot -soaps and creams seem to explode with too much lather due to the ridges -cleans up much too quickly
