In recognition of Open Comb Week! Four Gillette Razors, left to right: Old-Type; NEW short-comb; NEW long-comb; and ball-end Tech (G 1).
Since it's officially Open Comb Week, I had a great excuse to buy another razor yesterday. (That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it) She is a 1930s New Gillette. Had my first shave with her this morning. It was also my first shave with TSD Cooper Square Shave Soap (lanolin version); this is my favorite shave soap so far. Here's the lineup of today's shave:
Today was the Grafco, an open comb razor made by Merkur. A bit on the mild side, but not a bad shave. Had it loaded with a 7 O'Clock Sharp Edge.
This is an OC just for show, I recently got it as a overlooked ebay item. It appears to be a never used Khaki set. Found the 2 blades in the blade vault , just a small crack in the handle.
Used my MMOC on Wednesday, the blade wasn't in correctly, the lower right edge was above the tab. Scratched my neck up pretty bad so I skipped shaving for a couple of days. Pulled out the MMOC again this morning and got a fine shave.
Saturday, and for me, it's not about an "open comb" so much as it is about an "open blade." Yep, for me Saturday means straights. Today it was my Robeson ShurEdge. Tomorrow back into an OC mode with my Gem MMOC.
One of these days I am going to man up and shave with a straight. I really need to learn more about them (good ones vs. bad ones) because I always see a lot of them at antique stores when looking for safety razors.
My wife and I frequent antique stores. I just looked for blades that were not rusted, chipped, cracked, or broken. I didn't worry about how sharp or dull they were. Then I sent them off to Glen (aka gssixgun here at TSD) to be honed and made shave ready. Some good ---> *good* Some bad ---> *avoid* Also, check this out, if you haven't already ---> *click* I approached it this way - if my ancestors could do it, I can do it.
Gave the Valet VC2, a run this fine Sunday morning. Pretty good result for a razor I've used only once or twice previously. Might give the VC3 a run also this month some time. I don't think I've ever used that one. It's less aggressive from what I've read on the forums.
Last chance for joining this theme, sorry, I had to try my new to me iKon Slant this week! Today I used the open comb side of the iKon OSS with a Voskhod blade. homemixed preshave oil grated and pressed into a bowl Arko Rituals synthetic shave brush block alum Arko Moist aftershave balm
Had a Gem blade loaded into my Gem Micro-Matic Open Comb. Lathered up with some AoS lavender soap, three passes and I'm BBS. Love it!
Used the MM OC again to finish Open Comb week. Face lathered Cella and did three passes. Great Sunday morning shave.
