I posted a similar thread here last year (but 2012 RAD) Thats Razor Acquisition Dissorder http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/2013-rad.31311/ And the Year beforehttp://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/2012-rad.26363/ If you posted in last years thread how did you do? Just asking what do you intend to buy for the coming year? ie razors, brushes, hones, blades etc etc.... (NO monetary values need not about bragging, just asking what you hope/plan to add or REDUCE? from your den) "last year I got way more stuff than I planned but I did get my straights to Glen to be honed so I kinda did one thing on the list, I wanted a tub of MDC (Martin De Candre) but just have too many soaps/creams at the moment I still want a few bits from TSD store but sooo many products I have at the moment (some I have not even tried lol) Blades will be added again. And some new knots for some brush handles Ive had for awhile now still no rush for that though. Maybe a few straights to practice honing as I got some hones recently. and the odd hone/strop. As for reducing the the den there are a few bits I will off load but nothing major." The above is what I said last year so how did I do. Hmmmmm I have acquired quite a few more razors, even though I did NOT plan to do so 6 DE's to be exact and that not including the ones I bought and sold on, because I felt they where not much better than whats in my rotation. No MDC yet for the same reason, Yes I got some straights but I need to find time to practice honing. And I got some blades. (not many) I must not buy more razors lol.
I did pretty well last year. I sold a Barbasol Razor and then bought one for a fraction of what I sold the other. I traded off a bunch of blades and bought a couple pucks of soap. I also received a couple fantastic brushes as gifts during the year. Once again, it will probably be a puck of soap or a tube of cream, but I am pretty well stocked for the duration.
For those that don't understand the title. please read below. RAD= Razor Acquisition Disorder BAD= Brush Acquisition Disorder CAD=Cream Acquisition Disorder SAD=Soap Acquisition Disorder I hope that helps. Well done Dale for keeping good there, I do have one more brush (Not that I need one more) to arrive. I currently have 4 razors that I have not used yet, One brush I have not used yet, and a few soap, I have not used yet. So I need not buy much if anything!!!!
This past year, I actually purchased about a dozen or so razors (DEs & Straights), and sold about 7 or 8 of the lot. This next year (2014), I am already waiting arrival of 3 more razors ( 1 DE; 2 straights) I purchased waaaaay too many soaps, brushes and razor blades in 2013—and sold many of the brushes and gave away many of the blades. I have no plans to acquire any more soaps or creams, nor blades as I have enough to last until 2020. Although I have no plans to get any more brushes, if the right Simpson or Rooney were to come along…..
I've got Stirling soap in the mail. After shave, TOBS grapefruit. And thinking about a slant.. Reducing, I supply 2 of my sons with gear. But. Every time I come here, I always find something new to buy. A good thing!
I downsized a great deal; though I'm always on auction sites looking for minty or replated vintage Gillettes because I love them just so much more than any of the modern razors (Heck I've removed the Feather AS-D2 from my wishlists!!!). Still deciding on brushes, I do miss badgers from time to time however every time I use my boars I just think about how good they feel and how inexpensive they are compared to most badgers. I dunno if I'm lucky I'll find a custom reknot Ever Ready brush that will cause me to stop browsing at modern badgers; however the Green 200's seem to be scarce nowadays, I suppose a C40 looks just as good though. I'm also going to up a few more soaps since I've used SO many shaving creams over the last year an a half I need a bit of a change. Hopefully this replated New LC will be my last razor for quite a while; though I do need a backup, or perhaps a New SC to compliment it. uh oh, it's beginning again...
I just started traditional shaving in August. I already have accumulated enough soaps, creams, blades, aftershaves, colognes, razors, mugs, bowls, etc. that I don't intend to buy anything in 2014. That's my goal. We'll see if I make it.
With P.160 coming back via RazoRock, I will not be able to resist. Otherwise, I'm so over-the-top set it's ridiculous.
I can't see myself adding anything in 2014, as I really don't need anything. I have backups for my backups in everything.
I'll probably pick up another 100 pack of blades, unless I get a few PIFs. Other than that, I may try to avoid purchases unless a Fasan Doubleslant becomes available.
Well as of now I have another 100 Vikings Sword blades coming in and I'll be getting more during the course of the year in an attempt to build up my stash...Also I'll be getting some more Arko shave sticks..I've been thinking about a "small scuttle",but Robert Becker I've heard is going to cut down or stop making them....And of course there are always new blades(to me) that I will need/want to try...Perhaps I'll pull the trigger on a UFO Barber Pole handle this year
Oh yeah, and I'm considering reducing my horde of various blades and purchase extra boxes of Astras instead. I still can't get over how well they work for my face.
2013 was my first year wet shaving so I purchased a lot of samplers that I'm still working through. I expect in 2014 to continue to acquire full portions of items I like and that includes soaps, creams, pre shave oils, blades, and aftershaves. I already know a few of them like Truefitt & Hill Grafton where I've got the full size aftershave balm but I need to get a full size shave cream and I'd also like a 3 pack of the bath soap. Another is Musgo Real Lime Basil that I'd like to have a full size shave cream, bar soap, etc. A few soaps/creams that I'm curious about include Czech & Speake 88, I Coloniali, Institute Karite, Mikes, Klar, MDC, Dr Dittmar, and a few of the artisan products I see mentioned regularly. In the pre shave category I'd like to get a full size Truefitt & Hill pre shave oil and I'd like to try the Cromwell and Cruthers pre shave oil. I continue to poke around antique stores and I've got my eye out for a Schick adjustable and whatever else jumps out at me.
I may need more blades around the end of 2014 & will probably need to make another batch of shaving soap. But I have no major new products on my wish list.
