I'm more the investigative type - I tend to seek below the surface for the reasons of our actions. And the more we know, the less sorry we tend to get in the end ;-) Storing silica-gel in air tight containers "could" end in the opposite result of what one wants... attract the moisture and keep it sealed and worsen the situation. Many campers here have experience that with their wagons. It's not uncommon that the cabinets etc with the silica-gel are worse than the ones without. Due to the bags that attracts moisture. I'm not saying that it happens in this situation here, but I avoid them if I can. And if it's only a problem above, like, 70% humidity, then there's no reason to use them as long as it's below. And then again, then you're not more safe than if not used.
Point well made But what about the gel-pack that's now "full" of moisture? I still recall the former mentioned caravans where it had the direct opposite effect, but perhaps that was because the cabinets of course wasn't airtight? It's surely food for thought. Although it's 25+ years worth of shaves for me, they doesn't consume much space so an appropriate container wouldn't take up excess space. Great discussion.
I'm down to about four blades from my original box of 100 Astra SP(s), which I purchased a little over one year ago. I just kept the box in my medicine cabinet this whole time and I haven't noticed any ill consequences. A coworker of mine bought me a $20 Amazon gift card for Christmas. I used it on two more boxes of the Astra SP(s) (I love them with all my heart ). I figured this time around I may need to do something to protect them since it will be about two years before they are all used. I think I'll double bag the box I won't be using until next year in a couple super heavy duty zip-locks.... I might add a dehumidifier silicon thingy.
A 5 gallon bucket full of them?! Holy crap man, a toast to you fine Sir. My 3oo or so blades is nothing compared to a 5 gallon bucket.
Thats hilarious, you have to remember to take the hose off before you add the rice! No, seriously, one thing us southern boys know about (florida) is humidity. Most days is near 100% humidity down here. Every salt shaker, tackle box, gun safe and medacine cabinet down here has a softball size wad of rice in it. it takes years until the rice is puffed up (maxed out) and has to be changed. My offshore boxes get a new fist full of rice once a year and those boxes are constantly subjected to salt water and closed up. Rice is non toxic, cheap, you can tell by looking at it when its used up. Hard to beat rice. Keep in mind EVERYTHING down here rusts practically over night.
As i scroll down.... i'm waiting to read about a member who put a humidity controlled blade storing wing off of their (not bathroom..but) shaving quarters
I store my blades like "swarden43" wooden cigar boxes,in original packaging with desicant packs when I have them, in a room away from the bathroom..I try and keep the brands in each their own box..I feel along with central air/heat even here in south Louisiana the're safe enough..
For bulk storage I use a shoe box in my closet with a couple silica packs in there. The rest are in a wooden presentation box for an N-Frame S&W revolver. I have too many blades.
Ok, what I should have said is that I have too many marginal blades that I am not likely to use anytime soon. I pulled out the box and took a look, there's about 2500 in stock.
So what exactly is this "shavepocalypse" of which you speak?? And what's the point to having gear you don't intend to use??
The Shaving Apocalypse. That maybe not too distant day when your favorite hardware or software will either no longer be available or will be so reformulated as to be horrible.
