Tabac bowls

    Oy :)

Would it be a valid thought to think that the Original Tabac bowl with lid some day in the future will be a sought after item, like the Old Spice's are today? Just got my bowl today and realized it's a pretty nice quality bowl! I have always thought it was a cheesy plastic thingie.

BTW: What a lovely lather that soap gives. I had just shaved few hours earlier so couldn't shave with it, but the consistency and smell blew me away. Can't wait for tomorrow.

Side story: I've always vented that nothing is available locally here. I'll have to retract that a bit. Went to the new supermarket down town today and I, amazingly, found a shelf with Tabac lotion and bowl with soap. There was also at little brush, I think it was synthetic no-name, no specs, no nothing. It was too shady so I didn't buy it - the handle wasn't even worth a re-knot. But hey! - it's there! Funny thing is, the supermarket is part of a chain that has a store across town - they don't have any of that. This is the single only store in the area I've found that carries shaving soaps. So now I have a Tabac bowl with soap - I had to get it now it was in front of my nose :D

There was also a full length of aisle space for Gillette cartridge products and canned goo in 10000 variants, okay exaggerated a bit, but there was many. Only one (1) tube with squeeze out gel, also from Gillette. Sadly one of the first ingredients was SLS, so I didn't get it. But I might show it to my friend who couldn't care less about soaps and creams. At least he can be without the propellants then.

I love the Tabac soap, my current one is on its last breath and I have another one ready to replace it. Lately I started to use it together with the MEM olive cream and I get some super-powered ubber-lather that beats everything around, including MdC :)

Back on topic...who's to say what'll be deemed "collectable" down the road? But I'de guess that the reason most of those old spice mugs and the like are still around today has more to do with the fact someone simply choose not to toss 'em away than it does with any prescience or clairvoyance.

I haven't tried the Tabac yet myself but what I've read recently sure has me interested; and when I do get around to it I'll probably just buy the refill puck and keep clear of those collectables. :lyrtuy5:

I'd guess for it to become collectible or sought after, they'd have to stop making them. Plus, they'd have to hold strong sentimental value to people. Old Spice mugs are no longer made, people have memories of their fathers, grandfathers, etc having them in their homes (sentimental value), and Old Spice is fairly well-known. Tabac isn't a household name (in the US at least). (Brands that are US household name examples; Campbells, Tide, Pepsi, Coca-cola, Old Spice, etc,)

I just keep thinking that back then, no body saw Old Spice in the light we do today. It was just a mug like any other, probably available anywhere for a bargain. Just as the Tabac is now.

It's not that I speculate in, if it's getting a collectable. I just got the thought because many things today are, that back then was nothing special. Then I think of stuff we have today and what/how we see that same stuff, 30 years from now :)

My wife and I like to frequent antique stores.
Believe me when I say there is nothing out there that people won't save and/or collect.

But Tabac isn't available anywhere (or rather everywhere) in the US. I can't find Tabac within 100 miles of me. That would not have been the case with Old Spice for the most part.

    That's true! :happy102:

But of course, that doesn't make that stuff collectibles.

Well, you can get it online I guess - easily and "everywhere". I mean, many shops carry it. Locally here I only have this shop, but a short trip to Germany and I can't kick my way forward for Tabac everywhere. Of course it's also a German brand.

What I meant, shortly spoken if that's not too late, is that as long as it's in production and it's for sale, then it's available to us. And as long as I can order a tub with soap for $25 give or take, then it's not sought after on eBay. I'm sure when Old Spice was in production you'd get a mug thrown after you at the drugstore, just like the Fatboy at $1,95 back then. Now ppl charge up to $100 or more for the same razor -only because it's not available anymore.

The internet doesn't build brand awareness in the US like the old standards of advertisement and sales through brick-and-mortar stores.

Same here. But I thought we talked about availability? I'm with ya when it comes to popularity and whether it's actually something people will buy or perhaps collect. But for collectors like us here on the board and other boards, we know what Old Spice, Tabac, etc. is without the need for advertisement.

Availability is part of brand recognition when discussing collectables.

As much as it might not seem it, we here are a small portion of the population of the world.
If I go ask 100 random people on the street if they are familiar with the Old Spice brand, a very high percentage of them will tell me "yes".
If I ask 100 random people on the street if they are familiar with the Tabac brand, a very high percentage of them will tell me "no".

I think we're talking past each other. I talk about availability here and now, not in the future. I can't explain it then, sorry.

In Denmark, maybe because we're so close to Germany, there's 50/50 percentile between the two if asking people on the street. My grandfather used both, although it's Tabac I remember him for. My dad the same use back in the days.

I think so, because I actually doesn't disagree with what you're saying. It's just not what I mean. It's all in my head and it doesn't come out through the keyboard as I want it to :( Maybe some other day :D
