It really pains me to say this because I never thought it would ever happen, but I can't use my Dovo Bismarck 5/8 straight razor ever again. I've had two cataract operations which gave me better vision, thank God but I still feel that I don't see as well as I should and I don't feel that I have the steadiness in my hands in order to use a razor like this. I'm also a man with a very nervous and excitable nature and I just don't feel like putting myself in danger. Last week, although I was able to start and complete my shave with the Dovo I must confess that I had some trouble doing it so I've decided that the time has come for me to give it up and just continue with my DEs. I'll keep the Dovo as a prized and precious souvenir - that's about all I can do at this point.
I'm sorry to hear that "crackstar"....But at least you can still enjoy a good DE or SE shave...Perhaps you could give a "Rolls Razor" a test run?
I'm really sorry to hear about that. Perhaps in a later stage when you are more used to the new situation you might feel more confident to give it another go. Plus it gives you an excuse to let yourself be pampered at a barbershop! Perhaps the barber will agree to using your Dovo on these occasions?
You had a good run with your straight. There just comes a time when enough is enough. At least you never cut yourself with it and you won't have to worry about the wife throwing it in the trash.
"GREAT" idea Mike about trying to get a local barber to give Jeff a straight shave using his very own straight razor..That would be a truely "traditional" shave..Throw in Jeff's mug and brush and it would be just like many old time "barber shop" pictures I've seen....
Hey Jeff-I am very sorry to hear that. I understand the changes we experience though. As the others have said, it is good you have a great battery of DE's to use. Carry on............
Sorry to hear it Jeff. It's tough when physical limitations keep us from doing things we enjoy doing. Sounds like you're doing the right thing though. Better to retire the straight before it gives you a serious reason to.
I'm sorry to hear this, Jeff. But, you're right to let your safety come first. And, at least on the bright side, they haven't made menthol a controlled substance yet.
Well Jeff I'm not your age yet and I'm not confident in using the straight razor I keep deep down in my drawer. So don't worry too much about it, העיקר הבריאות I'm sure you will continue to enjoy great shaves from the DE and the other razors you have
Sorry bout' that Jeff, I know in life sometimes we come to a bend in the road and have to go around the obstacle. But like the guys have said, you're EE will probably pick up the slack. And just think of all those good minty times ahead..
Jeff Sorry to hear this. I had a Straight Razor that was my Grandfathers. I could never get the hang of it to be able to us the SR, I got pretty good at stropping it. But it seemed like every time I used it I would get really bad cuts on my neck and just below my Cake Hole (aka mouth). Good luck
That sounds not good my friend...sad to hear...but Jeff, you have your menthol. Get well soon my dear friend.
I'd say being honest with yourself shows great character. Being a fellow geezer who left years of cartridges and come back to DE shaving, and loving it. I wish i had tried the straight razors sooner, but I am not going to start, just in case I don't have your character.
Jeff I remember your SOTD's with the Dovo on Gio's old site. They would make me smile , the enjoyment of using it and your appreciation of the its shaving really came across. I used to say to myself " no man enjoyed a single razor more ". YOU HAVE TO KEEP that razor I have known it for years, and to me its famous.
