Well, Virginia is technically the South...but it's not South Texas - received my SV and SoZ yesterday. Hmmmmm Mason-Dixon Line? LOL
Hmmmmmm...maybe the postman decided to try yours out himself; he may have used up his monthly SAD money, and just HAD to have it!
I can participate (sans photos for now). Wife and I went to the city wide garage sale locally today specifically to find a Gillette in my birth year (1962). Found one that may have been but the adjuster didn't seem to work well. Instead I walked away with a couple of Gillette 3-piece razors for a whopping $12 for both. One is a standard silver that I can find no serial marking other than the Gillette logo. Pics coming as soon as I get it cleaned up a little better. The other appears to be brass with a ball end. Again I can find no markings other than the Gillette logo. The head plate seems to be a darker color than the rest and the thing has some heft to it. Off topic, one thing I found odd was the number of used razors that were still loaded with used blades. The brass one still has an old Star brand blade loaded. Anyway, pics to come. I sanitized both with peroxide, alcohol and hot soapy water but that just revealed a lot of dried soap on the brass one. Soaking in hot HOT soapy water now.
As promised, pics attached. The head on the brass razor is really a lot deeper red than the rest of the razor. It makes me think it may be a replacement. But I'm happy to report I see no cracks in the handle. The silver razor seems to be your standard run of the mill Gillette. I'm not sure which one I'll try first but it'll definitely be on a day when I'm not planning on going anywhere in case I chew up my face. This is the blade that was still loaded in the brass razor. And now the goods:
Well, it was a little unplanned but I used the brass razor on tonight's shave with a Derby blade. I did one pass WTG and my XTG pass was with my EJ using a Feather blade. Surprisingly I did more damage with the EJ XTG than with the brass razor WTG. Could be the Feather blade. Just a couple of nicks but there was nothing with the brass razor. Without using science or a micrometer the blade gap on the brass razor looks significantly larger than on my EJ so I was expecting a more aggressive shave with the brass one. Interesting.
Not surprising, the Gillette Techs were considerably mild razors; the EJ probably felt like an R41 in direct comparison. Still a nice find though!
Sooooooo, what you're saying is, the brass one is a Gillette Tech? Trust me, I wouldn't know an R41 from R2D2. Total newbie.
