I bought 240 Personna blades from The Raor Co. for $37. They will wave the $50 minimum if you call them. they are coated SS. That's .15 each before shipping
I'm in the same boat as you - my first SE's are on the way... I ended up buying 30 GEM Stainless Steel coated - (don't want to bother with the care that comes with carbon) from Connaught. Shipped they were $10.
Yeah, I don't know about that. I was thinking of picking up some non abrasive metal polish. It's clean, but not polished.
Well, got the rest of my SE haul tonight. I was under the impression my buddy had a Featherweight and an injector for me. Turns out no injector, but an Ever Ready 1914, Ever Ready "pat app'd for" that flips open from the back, and an OCMM: In pretty decent condition but needing a bit of cleaning & polishing. I'm a little concerned about the OCMM, though: Aren't there supposed to be blade holder nubbins on the comb?
I imagine they are harder to wear off than a 1912 seeing that the blade isnt pushed forcefully down with a spring. Richgem could very well be right.
The brass is showing through all along the comb, makes me wonder if someone took something abrasive to it, for some reason. Got the others cleaned up today, though. Going to give the 1914 a whirl first, I think.
So, both with the Gem Junior and the 1914, it gets extremely tuggy when I try to go ATG. I've tried both the carbon and SS/PTFE blades. I assume this is just a matter of technique, but I'm not sure what exactly I need to adjust. Angle, probably?
You'll get it eventually. Prep cannot be overemphasized with SE shaving. But, angle might be the issue as your hand is probably auto-setting to a DE angle. I'd even skip on ATG for now and substitute 2 XTG.
I have the same problem with tugging ATG- but only on my chin. I attribute it to blade flex though it can be minimized with good technique. Look at my post to see what I'm talking about with the 1912s-style razors: http://theshaveden.com/forums/threa...ered-razor-in-your-opinion.36552/#post-646134 A razor with less blade flex will be easier such as any of the MMs, a Gbar, Featherweight, or Pushbutton.
Interesting. The chin is where it was worst for me (though I have not even attempted atg on my neck yet).
Was not planning on it, but just bought a bullet-tip MM, $6 shipped. "Needs a good cleaning" but based on the photos doesn't look bad at all. Blade holder nubbins are clearly intact.
