Lookin' great! ...though I originally thought you got something like this - which would be great as well!
Wow, nice find. I've never seen one of those. Like Darkbulb, I'm curious if it uses regular SE blades?
The Gem Junior Bar came out in 1907 and will take modern SE blades. Gem started using the Junior designation on razors that would use the then new "rib back" blade that first came out in 1906 as a replacement for the wedge blades that had to be honed and stropped like a straight razor. That's a very nice piece of early SE history you have there, congratulations!
"GREAT" score, it's in really wonderful condition!!! Make sure you use made for "face" shaving blades and not hardware store blades in it..I always liked Gem SS blades in my 1924 ER..
That Junior Bar is a Masterpiece of Functional Art...Designed by August Scheuber, the same genius who invented the GEM 1912...I'm not the most knowledgeable cat around about these beauties but I'm a huge fan of August Scheuber. And just looking at this lovely, is all the argument that needs to be made concerning his talent..
I have seen many times Gem razor but i never bought one I hesitate, something in my mind tells me "No" Many Vintage DE's are in my collection but not this one.
If you have the "traditional" Mediterranean beard (thick, tough, grows fast), I think you'd do yourself a favor to try one. You've got nothing to lose providing you can get one at a good price.
I am Greek I have a little bit sensitive skin with tough beard (not black but a little blond-red) Do those razor accept modern blades ?
I hesitated for a while too but then DE prices started getting crazy. I saw an Ever Ready 1924 for $8usd shipped and I jumped on it seeing I had not much to lose. I was pleasantly surprised. So much so that after four years of shaving with a double edge I sold every single one of my DEs. I shave exclusively with SEs now. It wont hurt much to try considering the prices for them are still low. The later ones can be found very cheaply ie. Featherweight, pushbutton, Micromatics.
Yes, they take modern blades. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to consider the later models (which are more mild): gbar, featherweight, pushbutton for example.
If it turns out that you don't like the razor for shaving, you may be able to find the optional attachment that will allow you to use it as a grilling accessory. These are very good cooked over mesquite!
Sir, is the blade supposed to go inside the blade stops or lay on top of them? The reason for my question is the space inside the blade stop looks too narrow to have a razor blade go in, and since the desing originally were for thicker blades i though perhaps they should lay against the stop. As soon as I get home, I'll take a picture of the area.
