Yes you can use up your gel and canned goo...I also dislike waste.. No I.M.O. its not near as good as "real" shave soap.. You can usually find a puck of Van der Hagan Delux shave soap locally in either a drug or grocery store...It's inexpensive and works "GREAT" much better I.M.O. then canned gel or goo..You can get a small ZipLoc bowl to store the soap in and a coffee mug or cereal bowl from home to use as a lathering bowl.. Also rather than buy bulk, you'd be better off get a large blade sampler pack...The more different blades you can try the better.... [Edit] I just realized your in the UK so scratch the VDH soap, but since your in the UK I'm sure there are a ton of local soaps to use..
I already ordered the Taylors of Old Bond Street cream. However, I have a few questions regarding it. How long will that 150g box last? Can I apply it without brush on my face and my last question: If I maintain my EJ de89 razor (only drying it with a towel after shaving), will it last for at least 3 months? Sorry for the questions, I am just making some calculations whether traditional shaving will cost me less than modern cartridge shaving. Thank you.
A tub of shaving cream will probably last you about 3 months depending on how much you use. Your razor will last much longer than 3 months. Dropping one of those razors is the only reason it would last less than 5 years I think. If the plating stays intact, it could last you the rest of your life.
That razor could last a lifetime! I've been meaning to get an EJ. My everyday is the 34C and I love it.
Thank you! So how much does it cost for shaving a month, if I shave let's say every 2 days and of course, if I already have the necessary kit (DE razor, blade, cream, etc)?
If you already have the kit, a supply of blades and soap, you will have no additional cost. Your only future investment will be time if you can avoid the siren song of the various ADs that seem to call to many of us.
Only you can answer that question. How long a blade lasts for you? And how much do you pay for your blades? You do the math. For me, if i shave every other day With SS GEM blades it comes out to 0.50usd.
Ok, a month of shaving with good quality but inexpensive stuff... Razor - EJ DE89 - $30 - say it lasts 10 years - comes out to about $0.25 per month Brush - Let's say $15 for an Omega boar and it lasts 5 years - comes out to $0.25 per month Let's say Astra SPs or Personna Labs which cost me $0.09 or $0.12 per blade - 4 shaves per blade & 16 shaves/month - about $0.50 For soap, Arko - $1.50 per stick and lasts me about 6 weeks - $1.00 per month. You'll probably need some after shave - I'll go with Aqua Velva - a $5 bottle lasts me about 3 months so say $2/month So monthly cost for everything about $4 on the low end. You can spend more if you want though
The razor will last as long as the plating does....When the plating wears off or is chipped off thats when the "pot metal" will be exposed and start to corrode..Until then your razor will be fine....I used my EJ89 daily for over two years with no problems....The only reason I don't use the EJ anymore is because I upgraded it to a SS Weber DLC razor...
So i pay monthly only for blades, right? How about the shaving brush? I guess I have to change it every 2-3 months, right? Also, are there any stainless DE razors sold by the UK Amazon?
A good brush will last for years. Just wash it out after every use and let it dry. Amazon UK sells the Ikon razors. Pricey but I think they shave great. With a good razor and brush your only expense will be blades and creams for years to come.
A decent brush will last you several years. And blades, if you buy in bulk are usually cheaper. Just make sure you find a blade you like before buying 100 of them. 100 blades will last me about a year.
I've been using my EJ razor daily for two years. It is still in great condition and I have no reason to believe that it will not last many more years. The only thing I do is rinse it off after each use and hang it on its stand. Every once in awhile I will clean off the soap residue with a towel. I use a Vulfix 1000A brush. After two years of daily use, it is still in great shape. Like the razor, I just rinse it off and hang it up. Blade wise, I found the Derby blades to be one of the worst that I've used. I recommend getting a sampler pack and trying every blade type for a week until you find your favorite. For the record, I settled on the Astra SP blades. They are great blades and can be purchased economically in 100-blade packs. There are a lot of soaps out there. Most of the soaps I've tried have been good performers, but whether or not you like the scent is a very personal thing. I like Ogallala soaps very much and also enjoy Rays of Colorado Bay Rum soap. Recently I tried some Stirling soaps. I found them to be great performers, although I didn't care for most of the scents. Wet shaving can be very economical if you buy one good razor and one good brush and then continue to only spend money on consumables like soap and blades. Hard soaps are very economical as they seem to last a very long time. A lot of the guys here get a bit carried away with their razor and brush "collections". There is no need to do that unless of course you personally choose to.
Has the chrome plating worn off after these two years? So after each use, you wash it with water and then dry it? As a person commented several posts above, I checked the Ikon razor, but £135.00 seems a bit expensive for me, considered that I am moving to the UK and have a limited budget. This is why I ordered the EJ razor. I noticed that it is not expensive and is also commonly used.
No, the plating has not worn off. I just rinse it, shake the water off a bit, then hang it up. I do not dry it.
