After a year of wet shaving I've found I still love the canned foam. But I love my Semoque and Omega brushes too. I've tried using a brush with canned goo in the past but wasn't successful. For those that use (or have used) a brush with foam, what do you do?
I'd suggest trying to add some glycerine, the reason they foam is the aerosol in the can so I'm assuming you'll need to counter that when taking the brush to it. I've never tried to use a brush with my Barbasol so it's kind of a mystery to me.
I should clarify that I'm using the brush to apply, not make lather (I like the sensation of applying). I think I'll try damping the brush first so it's a little wet.
If you just like the beard stimulation, can you use it in your pre-shave routine? I just wash my face beforehand with glycerin soap and then let my face soak for a bit. I could see working it in with a brush being a nice thing to try. If you are using a pre-shave oil or something greasy, probably not such a good idea....
It will just waste foam. Pretty pointless if you ask me. Have you used Proraso in the tube? I found it's lather to be most similar to a foam out of any traditional product I've used.
I've been researching and found a couple sources that suggested using a damp brush and applying the canned foam into the brush, not too much. Perhaps I'll give this a try. I appreciate all your responses gentleman!
I have and I agree it does have that foam feeling. Great product and easy to mix. I still whip up lather but canned foam is better overall.
I cannot connect the dots on this one. The brush is used not only apply the lather, it is used primarily to make the lather. Since you like the sensation of the brush, you may want to give face lathering a try. I find face lathering to be comforting (lots of brush-to-face time) plus a great way the build the lather. You can use a boar or badger; soap or cream.
You are welcome. It took me a few times to get the soap/water thingy going but after I did wow! I recommend you stick with one brush and one soap until you get the hang of face lathering. Consistency is key...different soaps/brushes intro too many variables. Please give us feedback...perhaps we can be of assistance.
While researching I came across this account: "I tried to spread this nasty goo on my face but it just wasn't happening so I looked down at my mug and brush and said what the hell.I sprayed a glob in the mug and hit it with a well shaken out brush.Wonder of wonders after about 30 seconds this crap developed into the most beautiful lather you could ask for, dense perfect lather with gorgeous peaks." This was my experience today! I tried my Semogue 1305 with Barbasol and it worked fine. I think perhaps the damp brush was the key. Aces! I appreciate the offers to help with face lathering, but I've had too much frustration with that process.
I was really surprised at how well it worked! it applied just like a mixed lather and the brush cleaned easily and fully.
Ya know, one of the nice things about our hobby is that everybody is able to find something that works for them if they stick to it. May not work for me but, go for it Leo K. Power to the people.
Making my lather is one of the really enjoyable things about shaving to me. I pretty much face lather exclusively now. I'm fairly shocked that you are able to come up with such a good result from the Barbasol. I used Barbasol exclusively for about 20 or so years (excepting an ill fated fling with Edge Gel, not good) and it worked perfectly well. I don't think I'll be returning to it anytime soon though, my priorities have changed quite a bit in the intervening years.
Totally understand, mixing the lather is awesome. I like it too and still mix my Arko when I'm in the mood. I just prefer having the lather ready-made (mixing it makes my hand sore)!
At some point, creams became less available than foams. I still kept using a wet boar brush to apply (just apply) foam on my face. I just could not stand the mess one makes with hands.
