So, I've always been a face latherer at heart. Tried out lathering a couple of times in a cup/bowl and realized it wasn't too bad and enjoyed having one more way to enjoy my shaving prep. Heard all these great stories about 'warm lather' and how luxurious it was and having never seen or held a scuttle in my life I decided to go for it when I came across Robert Becker's site and the opportunity to get myself a scuttle in a mid-size (which is what I really wanted) for about 32 dollars. Hand made to order. I opted for the #005 with a more slanted interior with ridges on the inside - in all black. It took about three weeks from order-to-delivery and delivery came in a package earlier this week... Opening up the box reveled a very securely packaged scuttle With some assistance from my newly acquired Opinel knife I quickly unwrapped the black beauty And a beauty it was...absolutely flawless. Deep, deep black with nice internal ridges and a rim around the top of the bowl that I felt would help to keep the lather inside. Woohooo... "new things!". Plunked my SOC boar into it to get a sense for how well sized it was...and to me...it was perfect! (Gillette Slim in the foreground to give a sense of scale) Using it later on I was surprised of how much water the scuttle could hold. That's great as that amount of water will help keeping it nice and warm. So I filled it with warm water - both inside the scuttle as well well as in the bowl - and put my brush in it to soak while I showered. Came back out, poured out the water inside it and refilled it with 'warm not scorching hot' water and lathered up some Cella. Wow - this thing makes lathering a piece of cake. Not sure if it was the warmth or the ridges in the scuttle but lather was practically exploding from it. Oh and....it really IS a luxurious feeling to have a warm brush and lather when you apply for your next pass. I felt like such a gent ;-) After splashing on some Tabac EdC after all my post-shaving I was ready to go out and face the world. Loved it.
I'm so happy I got one before he stops production all together which I kinda fear he will be doing soon.
Very nice indeed. Any time, anywhere, warm lather is cool. Enjoy! Got a color picture of the Semogue brush in the Scuttle?
That is beautiful! I have been on the fence on buying one of these... To those that own them, is there really a noticeable difference vs. just soaking a standard bowl in hot water while the brush is soaking?
Arg! Kinda what I figured since everyone raves about them. Time to start snooping around for one, as I do like that hot lather!
As an owner of a couple, I'll add some comments about scuttles: PROS: • they will provide warm (not steamy-hot), decadent lather • Keep the brush moist & warm • most will keep lather warm up to 20-30 minutes—long enough for the majority of shaves. • Add positively to the overall shaving experience. • They look cool…. CONS: • can be costly • breakdown lather if water is too hot • Are easily broken (especially in a wet, hard environments such as most bathrooms) • they take up counter space • One more item to wash post-shave • Use of them can be addicting
I just nest a couple of my shaving bowls whenever I want a particularly warm lather or want it stay warm longer. Hot tap water in the bottom and the lather bowl sits on top. But those are definitely some great looking scuttles. Congratulations and Enjoy!
Your set up looks great. I think if I added one to my Medicine Cabinet.......there would be lot's of blood (not from shaving) from "She Who Must be Obeyed" smacking me in the nose.
Him now limiting the production to 20/month and his comments about it becoming a lot of work now that he's retired. I may be wrong though.
Thanks.. His products certainly found a market on the various shave forums and I would be disappointed to see him stop producing his pottery.
