Have anyone done anything like this? The instructions are actually pretty straightforward....I do wonder how it would work as a shaving bowl... Step-by-step here: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Recycle-a-Coconut-Shell-into-a-Bowl/?ALLSTEPS
As I am loathe to throw anything away if it can be repurposed, this seems like a sound idea, assuming I acquired the coconut for consumption to begin with. If so, and I went this route to repurpose the shell, I would square off the base a bit...
In that case, if you make a mistake with the bowl, you've got a snazzy new top to go with your grass skirt.
This sounded like a fun project so I borrowed it and ran with it. My dog was playing soccer with the coconut for a couple days in the yard before I cracked it. Decided to go Au Naturel, instead of sawing a straight cut, and just bashed it open. Got all the stuff cleaned out of it, and its looking like a good size for lathering. First use will be later today. After dinner I'll add a picture and do a little review of how it goes.
Credit to ohpaos: Happy Hump Day, ya'll! A bit of unskilled Coconut Carpentry-- Last weekend I decided to make a lather bowl after seeing some gorgeous coconuts at the market. I chose the largest, most symmetric coconuts. They were gutted, de-furred, dried & subjected to awful singing. Shrinkage was significant & asymmetric due to variation in shell thickness. After light sanding, I lathered easily with a 22mm VDH boar & Mystic Waters Rosalimone, but the shell felt too delicate for use without a hard finish (on at least the exterior). Crafters often use melamine for nutty projects, but I need to research the options. This was a fun project, but the cocobowl is not without issues. "Lather in a half-shell...Turtle Power!" (lather dehydrated outside in the heat)
I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts There they are all standing in a row Big ones, small ones, some as big as your head Give them a twist a flick of the wrist That’s what the showman said Sorry...... Couldn't resist!
Its pretty rough. Gonna need some sanding because it made a mess from shedding all that hairy junk on the outside. Decided I don't so much care for the jagged rim on it so I'll even that out and sand it down. I got a decent lather in it, but I think ultimately I'll be happier if I varnish it, or something to give it a nice polish inside. It's a work in progress.
Nicely done, William. How much time have you put into it so far? Be sure to give us a round #2 review when you've varnished it.
Another step by step instructions that talks about evening out the base for better stability http://thesunnyrawkitchen.blogspot.com/2012/12/how-to-make-coconut-yogurt-and-coconut.html
Only took a few minutes to smash it open. Then I baked it like in this clip... Mine didn't drop out like hers after 2 1/2 hours in the over tho. Still took me a couple minutes to chip it out. Thats where I am now. But yeah, needs some spit & polish work. I'll update when I have more.
