Most people don't like Lord blades. The ones that do though like the Sharks the best. Probably because of the packaging... Cognitive dissonance you know?
Derby blades are also not well liked nowadays, or so it seems in many comments I have read. There was a time not that long ago when Derby blades were very highly regarded and widely praised on the various forums. The same was true for many of the Lord blades (Lord, Shark, Big Ben, Racer, etc.). So how did these blades go from hot to not in three or four years? It's rather surprising, at least to me. My take is that some of the Lord / Sotraco blades are quite good, others less so.
I know what you mean. I started shaving around the time they were recommended. They seemed rough. last year I came across some more Derbys given to me as a freebie and they seemed the same to me- sharp enough but rough. I remember Mama Bear soaps where all the rage back then too..Think 10 years ago jean shorts where all the rage but who will be caught wearing them now?
We joke about the various _ADs, but, whether you consider yourself enthusiast, hobbiest, or addict, I think part of the trend for "in" blades comes from addiction-type behaviors. Seriously! I remember talking to a nurse who worked at a drug rehab center. She said that the patients, if left unchecked, would go on break and talk about what they liked about getting high. The next thing you know, all the patients are jonesing for a fix! I see us doing the same thing here. Thanks to this thread, I WILL be ordering some carbon Treet Black blades. Like I need those! I think all it would take would be a Derby apostle with a flair for writing. If he (or she) was very helpful to noobs and recommended Derbys as THE blade... The same apostle might even exposit the merits of Derbys to rekindle an interest in someone who had used them "back when" and decided to check up on a dim memory. I found this pretty dang interesting! >here< Are we addicts? Hmm... decide for yourselves! I don't think I'm quite there yet, but may have a latent problem! ...
Many folks don't let current trends dictate their preferences; I would think this especially true in situations where nobody but you and your vendor needs to be aware of your personal preferences, as would be typical for a razor blade. . . Or, is it your contention that you can tell by looking at a person's face whether he shaves with a Feather, a Dorco-300, a Treet SE, a Fusion cartridge, or an electric shaver? Incidentally, I do still have jean shorts, and they're still appropriately sized for me; when the weather's nice enough, I see no reason not to wear them, whether for mowing the lawn or casually around town.
GSB and Feather so far, but I got 5 great shaves out of a Shark Super Chrome recently where as the Feather gave up after 3.
Astra SP & Feather Stainless, followed immediately by Personna Lab (blue). Looking at the Sean's list, it appears as though I'm not unique in my choices....
