once an alum block is used after a shave, how do you store it? put it in box it came in? let it dry in medicine cabinet?...
Dry it with tissue or paper towel and put in the plastic box before putting in medicine cabinet. Wet alum puts out sulphide gases that react with the metal.
I just rest mine angled on top of the open plastic box, so it doesn't dissolve if there is any water in the box. I wet the block once or twice and rub the skin area (bug bites, skin blemishes, etc.) until the block is dry. No need to dry the block.
I shake mine off well and put it back in the box. It is then left on a shelf open to the air. If I used a medicine cabinet I might dab it with my wash cloth before putting it back in the box.
My little Razorock alum stick has a hollow plastic handle with a hole in it. Any water drains out of the handle, but they recommend drying the alum before storage. I guess any drying method is good so it doesn't melt away faster.
Well this was very informative. I have been putting mine into the medicine cabinet wet and not realizing the issues it could cause.
I just toss mine in a plastic toothbrush case with my nick sealer and close it. Haven't seen any problems.
Mine is easy: it came with its own storage box! (click for full-size images). After use it is stored back in the cabinet. (The cardboard box I tossed away after taking the pics...) Gotta love DVH (De Vergulde Hand - The Guilded Hand) If I didn't have this storage solution, I guess I'd just put it back in its cardboard box after dipping it dry.
That's why I got a plastic travel case for a toothbrush, the alum and my Clubman nick relief stick fit in it pretty well. The plastic soap travel case I found is just bigger. I was thinking of using my Proraso pre-shave jar when it's empty, but it's a little too small. The trick is finding a jar the right size, I might have to search through my wife's cosmetics when she's not looking for the right size jar with a removable label.
I have the RazoRock alum block, as well. I just dry it with a towel, put it back in its case, then stash it in the medicine cabinet.
Here's my "Aha!" moment of the day: I'd been trying to figure out a way to store my alum block on the counter after use to let it air dry, but wanted it up off the counter so it wasn't sitting in water. I left my block sitting in a bit of water once and it developed a bunch of tiny holes with sharp edges that scratched thin lines in my face. Didn't notice as it was happening but when my face dried there were several long red lines that didn't come from my razor. So, yeah, gotta keep that from happening again. Today I was digging through a drawer in the kitchen and came across one of those little trays that keeps the business end of your chop sticks off the table. Right side up it wasn't a good fit, but upside down it's perfect.
I just throw it back in the box - but now am considering other options - thanks for starting the thread. I never would've given it any thought.
I have a thumb-sized block of alum that must date back to the '30s judging from the box it came in. The alum works fine but keeping it in that flimsy old cardboard is a pain, so decided to let it soak overnight in my bottle of Dickinson's witch hazel. I have gotten into the habit of using both after each shave so I figured why not combine two steps into one.
