Happy 4th everyone! In celebration of our Independence Day I'd thought I'd roll with Cold River Soap Works American Barbershop and a handturned cherry handle (by me) with a TGN F2 24mm knot.

Man, I'm loving this soap, hands down the best stuff I've used to date!

    Prep: hot shower
    Razor: WW2 Gillette Tech
    Blade: BIC platinum (day 3)
    Brush: Vie-Long
    Soap: Proraso green
Passes: 2 (WTG, XTG) + touch ups
    Post: Proraso blue AS lotion

Three shaves in and I think the BIC might be done. Still a great shave from this blade but it just wasn't as smooth as the first or second day. I'd prefer to get four shaves out of a blade, but I'm willing to go with two or three if the performance is there, and this blade performs great for me.

I've been using the Proraso Green in the hopes I'll have a breakthrough and finally get some level of cooling from this soap (and it still is a great soap without the menthol kick). I actually got a subtle hint of the menthol with today's shave. It was more of an aroma then a feeling, but it was there.

Prep: Warm wash with Stirling Barbershop
    Lather: Tiki Set Sail vegan
    Brush: Omega B&B
    Razor: Gillette New
    Blade: Crystal
Post: Cold water rinse and Captain's Choice Lime

3 easy passes. I am breaking in the new B&B branded Omega boar bristle brush and it is offering no surprises - it is an Omega. So far has plenty of backbone and tips well, not quite soft yet. Tiki soap continues to impress with ease of lathering and longevity of puddle (was a puckish soft thing when it started on May 22, now just soft in the edges of the container) and how little is needed to make a decent lather. Crystal blade did a nice smooth job for a first shave.

    Friday:
hot shower w/Murray & Lanman Patchouli bar soap
    Homemade PSO
1973 Gillette Black Handle SuperSpeed 2+ passes
    Gillette Wilkinson (4)
    Donut boar
D R Harris Windsor cream in a warm mug
    Thayers unscented w/aloe
    D R Harris Windsor AS

What a difference 23 years of engineering advances makes. The last few shaves have been with my recently acquired 1950 SuperSpeed so this morning I pulled out my also new 1973 SuperSpeed. The smoothness was instantly evident and a refreshing change. I was able to shave alright with the older version and I tried at least three different blades in it but the amount of concentration required was definitely higher and it certainly didn't glide over my face the way the BlackHandle does. This razor shaved much more like my 1966 SS so now I'm curious to try my recently acquired '52 BlackTip and "54 FlareTip to compare those as well.

    American Shave
I used as many made in the USA products as I could today. Excellent shave. Since America is a land of immigrants, any products would really work for this.

Prep: RR/HTGAM lime menthol - made in Arizona
Soap: Synergy Coconut Bay - made in Massachusetts
Brush: HIS XL - made in Thailand
Razor: Gillette Old Type Pocket Edition - made in USA

    Friday 7/4/14

    Prep: Gaia face scrub
    Oil: Shave Secret
Brush: 20mm Whipped dog set deep
    Scuttle Georgetown Pottery
Razor: slim adjustable set to 5
    Blade: Voskhod
    soap:

    MDC Fougere (Martin de Candre)

    Post: Alum sprayed on
    Witch Hazel: Generic unscented
    AS: None

I am almost out of the MDC Fougere sample. I am slowly becoming convinced that MDC may be worth the price. The quantity and quality of the lather you get out of a very small amount is amazing. It looks like tomorrow will be the last day for my sample. But, 5 days on a tsp sized sample is pretty good. I would not normally expect to use as much as I am using now because I tend to waste a lot when I do not have the soap in a container I can use with my brush.

I am again forgoing an AS because I want to see how well MDC moisturizes my face. So far, it is excellent

Mark, I knew MdC does last—a 200g jar is supposed to last at least a year with daily use— but I'm surprised (and pleased) to see how much mileage you've gotten from such a small sample (tsp) of the soap. I look forward to reading how the other samples treat you.

today's shave is a luxury in honor of independence day. I've tried to use American products all week. my shave ifs dfs++ today. only the jaw line keeps me from bbs, as normal. good shave although I did nick myself. I thought kinda fitting, to remember,
an American luxury comes with the price of some blood shed.
    the vdh was white
    the aqua velva was blue
    the blood was red.

May the Lord bless the United States. and may the people of the US search for and serve the Lord.

A bit sad that to go this all-American for a shave, you have to go vintage on some things.

Prep: Hot shower, Healthy Accents Daily Renewal cleanser
    Brush: Simpson 56 Best Badger
Soap: RazoRock One-X Tallow Croap :love055:

Post: Cold water splash, Bloc Osma Alum, Dickinson's WH, RazoRock One-X AS Splash

I'd like to tell you I skipped the preshave balm just to get an idea of how the One-X lathers without the balm underneath. . . but I'd be lying. I simply spaced it, in my haste to yet again use this croap. DFS, no weepers, no irritation, and otherwise nearly perfect results, even without the balm. In theory, tomorrow is for Speick cream and aftershave; we'll see if I can break One-X's spell on me for that.
