I was a long time Brylcreem user, but recently made the switch to pomade and find it to give much better, longer lasting hold. I am using Three Flowers at the moment and unlike some reports that I have read, I have no problem washing it out of my hair with my regular shampoo. So what is everyone else here using?
I've used Layrite for as long as I can remember...I sport a high and tight pomp usually. Tried many others and in my opinion nothing else can compare.
I wash with this... ..and I style with this: ....but next I want to try out; and; To settle on a pomade you first have to figure out if you prefer oil or water based pomade. And then decide if you want a strong, medium or light hold. Best video reviews of pomades are, according to me, The Pomps videos. Pomade.com has an amazing selection of pomades
I normally use a tiny bit of shower oil. Since a lot of hair tonics use mineral oil I figure why not just use a skin oil that contains mineral oil. Dirt cheap and easy to find. I used to use Jeris hair tonic with oil but can't get it locally anymore and shipping is outrageous.
I decided to go with a petroleum based over a water based because I was looking for a bit of a shine and reasonably strong hold. I have no real experience with pomades and just figured that was what would meet my requirements, and the fact that it was under $3.00.
It's true that oil based products are generally less expensive than the water based ones - the main drawback with oil based ones is that they are not as easy to wash out. Anchor have some water based products now that bridges the whole oil-and-water by having a product that is water based but acts and lasts like oil based ones - including not drying out (which I have no idea how they did).
The funny part is that I have no problem washing the oil based pomade out. I thought that it was going to be a problem, but one wash with my normal shampoo and it's completely gone.
I agree. I think people make too big a deal out of it - and if you want any kind of shine that lasts it's almost impossible to beat oil.
I use shampoo and whean my hair gets to long i buzz it off and trim around the ears and line up the sideburns like a barber
I use a non-sulphate shampoo once a week and on the rest of the days I use hot water only. Hair has never felt better.
Straight bear grease. Render it myself. One medium sized bear lasts several years. Great hold and shine. Have to be careful in the woods though - lady bears seem to be unduly attracted to me... :bang:
My hair is about 1/4" long because I live in Florida and it is summertime. I use whatever bath soap I am using.
I found a full bottle o' this ancient stuff somewhere. I don't have dandruff but it's got decent hold and isn't oily. And the bottle is too cool. Other than that, I swear by Avon's old protein hair/scalp conditioner for me, still available for next to nothing wherever junk is sold. Very similar to the Werx - doesn't defy gravity but is very good for grooming. Tried Brylcreem, Vitalis, all the others you can still get...too oily now that my hair's starting to thin out.
How do you rate the Old Spice pomade? I recently tried some Axe clean cut, but it seemed that I needed to use way too much of the stuff. I normally use a small amount of the Tre Flores and get great style and hold, but with the Axe I seem to need 3-4 times more to get equal results. @Darkbulb
Axle grease. Actually, nothing. I wash it daily and use a conditioner (my wife is a cosmetologist). That's it.
I have straight, thin, oily hair. I shampoo every day with a brand called, "Thicker Fuller Hair Revitalizing" Shampoo . Then I add nothing and use a curl iron, if needed. You can see the results in the pic.
