If you want to stay out of sight, it's actually still easy to do that. With a VM phone, or Tracphone, or any burner, you buy the phone in a retail store with cash, and you buy your top off cards with cash. Nobody ever knows who you are. So while the line can be recorded or snooped on, there's nothing telling them who is using it.

The only expense related to the phone is a monthly payment card, which is paid for in cash. The phone I have now is not a smart phone and does not have GPS on it in anyway. It can be traced to the nearest cell tower it's used from, and that's it. Even if it was GPS'd, I live in an apartment building, so I could be just about anybody in the building.

Now, all of this makes me sound paranoid and these are none of the reasons that I have this phone. I have it because it's cheap and I told Tmobile to take a hike. I thnk the burner aspect of it is kind of funny, so I've remained anonymous with it. The phone that I just ordered is a smart phone, so all that goes out the window. Which leads me to say... Nobody has lost any privacy. What's happened, is that many people, most people, have traded their privacy and anonymity away for magic beans and sparkly toys. Your phone is GPS'd, you have a cable box that monitors everything you watch, your car has a GPS on it and even a kill switch so that law enforcement can stop it dead if they need to. You pay for everything with credit cards so you can get imaginary points and fill out surveys online about your life to earn more imaginary points.

As far as all that goes, I live like it's 1963. My truck has no GPS or kill switch. My phone has no GPS. I don't use a card unless I'm paying for something online where I can't physically hand over cash. I don't have cable, I have internet which I use through an anonymous box to stream TV and movie services. You get the idea. The internet is about the only thing that can be used to look at my life, and most of that is anonymous and unreachable. Who knows who's doing what with all the wifi around.

I really need to make that post one day about what I used to do.

Did you pay for that phone in cash? Does anyone who has access to that number know your given name or address?

Yep bought it in cash. And of course there are people who know me, which is the weak link on that. Like I said, I wasn't trying to hide. My point is that it's still very possible to live an anonymous, private life, and any privacy you've lost is at your own hands.
