Congratulations on the GEM Jr. The angle is the thing to watch. It is a low angle, about 15 degrees with just the weight of the razor, no pressure.

Getting under the nose with these is a trick. Use the side to side method. I find it works best. It is illustrated in these GMM instructions.

Excellent reply. Thanks for the instructions. I didn't think about trying the side to side method. I'll definitely give that a try.

At first I tried placing the head flat against my face. I read somewhere that this was the way to do it. I quickly found, however, that I needed to tilt the razor ever so slightly for a much better shave. After using this razor only 1 time, I'm extremely pleased with the results. I got a better shave than with my DE, but I had a slight bit of tenderness. It was bad at all though, and I didn't have any irritation. I'm sure that will get better as my technique improves.

Sunday, August 10 - double razor fun!

Prep: warm wash with Stirling Naked & Smooth bath soap
    Lather: Stirling Spice
    Brush: Omega B&B branded boar
Razors: Gillette Tech (face) Gillette New SC (scalp)
    Blades: Astra(2) Persona Super (3)
Post: cold water rinse and sample of Blue Spice

The first week of school kept me pretty busy, so I had not shaved my head since Wednesday. I wanted to make sure and get a good shave on both my face and my scalp. I've had a bit of heat rash on my neck due to wearing a collared shirt now that school is back in, so I used the Tech for my face. The amount of stubble on my scalp called for a more efficient razor, so the New SC volunteered. Results, DFS on the face and CBS on the scalp.

    Sunday 08/10/14

    Prep: Gaia face scrub
    Oil: Shave Secret
Brush: 20mm Whipped dog set deep
    Scuttle: Georgetown Pottery
    Razor: 1912 EverReady SE
    Blade: Gem Blue Star
    soap: french soap mix
    Post: alum sprayed on
    Witch Hazel: Generic unscented

I was ready to fill my scuttle with hot water before jumping into the shower and at the last minute decided to just use cold water. My thinking at the time was that the lather never really felt warm, so it was not worth the bother. So, using cold water this morning was very different than using warm water. I did not notice, as some claim, a difference in the shave, but it was not as sweet as having nice, warm lather. Overall, I had a stunning shave.

I became hooked on using an SE the first time I tried it. They can give some truly outstanding shaves. Yes, the upper lip is a huge problem until you master it, but, IMHO, well worth the effort.

    Vacation shave

    Prep: hot shower
Razors: G. Wostenholm and Son Celebrated I.XL & G. Wostenholm and Son CANUCK
    Brush: Vie-Long
    Cream: Proraso blue
    Passes: 2 (WTG, XTG)
Post: Witch Hazel, Dove Men hydrate+
Well I couldn't decide which razor to use this morning, so I used both. A perk on not having a large selection of straights I suppose. I started with the Celebrated and got a nice pass out of it. Re-lathered and switched to the Canuck for the final pass. The edge seemed to be a little sharper with the Canuck it it finished up very nicely.

    Superb Sunday Shave
I went with B&M Ferox today because I love the post shave feeling from the lanolin and Shea butter. I was not disappointed. My Plisson whipped up great lather and applied it comfortably. My New LC smoothly dispatched my stubble. I used HTGAM Gondolier Aftershave/Cologne for the first time after a shave, and I'm impressed. The scent is the same classic as the soap of the same name, but strong enough to be a cologne. I'm curious to see how long it lasts. There was a very short lived alcohol sting (maybe from taking my time shaving!), then a pleasant moisturized dry down. It feels a little tacky for a bit, but absorbs quickly and feels very good.

    Prep: RR/HTGAM lime menthol
    Soap: B&M Ferox
    Brush: Plisson Synthetic
    Razor: Gillette New LC
    Blade: Personna lab blue

    SUNDAY
New day & a new razor to try. My first shave with the C-Mon Special 5/8.
A very smooth shaver which reminded me very much of the Dubl Duck. I can see now why these razors have been so popular.
Takes a keen edge, feels great in the hand, and easy to pull a great 3-pass shave from.
    This one is a keeper.

    Have a blessed Sunday, all!

    Soap: HTGAM Synergy Irish Cream
    Brush: Omega Boar
    Razor: Gillette Flare Tip A-1

This was my first time using that razor and blad since I got them a couple of weeks ago, and also my first time using any DE razor for that matter. I am in love! (Don't tell my wife) not nearly the irritation I'm used to getting with my gillette fusion proglide. I couldn't believe how well the razor and blade shave my sensitive neck. BBS and no major Knicks or cuts throughout either which was awesome especially for my first time shaving with a DE. Now I know what all the hype is about. Have a great Sunday! image.jpg

    David;
How do the CVS blades compare in longevity to a stainless steel blade?
How do you compare the longevity of a CVS SE to a DE blade?
Were you drying off the blades after you shave? I have heard this makes a huge difference.

I usually get 2 shaves out of either a Voskhod or a Feather DE. I am very new to SE shaving, and have only tried the Gem Blue Star and the CVS, both high carbon blades and made by the same company. For me, they seem to be giving me 4 good shaves, but still need to make sure they can consistently can do this. I have been drying my blades.
