Restoring a Super Adjustable

    Hey guys,

I found a guy who is willing to give me an H (1987) Super Adjustable, which is my birth year. The problem is this: he boiled it so the resin coating is discolored. The adjuster is also jammed and won't move. Is it worth trying to restore? Is there any way to do it??

I had another H on eBay, but the biding went higher than i was willing to go. Any advice??

Will the doors open? The boiling should have got rid of any gunk in the adjuster I'd think. So maybe some oil down the haandle? If that doesn't do it, I'd probably soak it for a day or so. If that doesn't get the adjuster moving, I don't know what's going on with it.

Well, if it's a gimme, what's to lose? I would soak it in mineral spirits (that is what I use on gummed up firearms) and see what happens.

You might be able to paint the handle with a resin type paint or use something like plastic dip to get the color and feeling back. As for the mechanism a good soaking or two in hot(not boiling) water and Dawn detergent or spraying it with scrubbing bubbles and gently trying to work the adjuster until it's free. A few passes through a sonic jewelry cleaner could also help getting any trapped gunk in the adjuster out...:) Lets us know how it works out?

I'll take a look when it shows up, hopefully he put in the mail today. I figure if it's free and I can get the adjuster working, it doesn't matter if it's ugly for a little while. I can always plastidip or paint the handle right? I even have some spray lacquer I used on my NEW short comb that I can hit it with to seal it. (Taping it off so the adjuster and head don't get any lacquer on them of course)

Black spray epoxy paint! Nothing else will hold up. Paint the handle, paint the numbers using the same paint with a toothpick. Then oil it up!

I bought a SA that would not make the final 1/4 turn. On the advice of Chris at RazorPlate I soaked it repeated in near boiling (notice I said "near boiling") soapy water...over and over again...until it finally loosened up. It took 3 days of re-heating the water whenever it cooled off. Don't give up, a freebie is always worth a little work.

Let us know how it turns out. I hope you can get it working. I have no advice to add, because the advice you have already gotten is good.

I got the SA today in the mail. It looks okay (aside from the enamel fade on the larger part of the handle). The adjuster mechanism is completely stuck. No movement at all. I can see that there is a good amount of buildup under the adjuster. I hit it with some scrubbing bubbles first and let the foam dissipate, and now it's soaking in the sink with hot (as hot as the tap would get) water and dawn dish soap. I'm going to get some mineral oil based on a couple recommendations above. I'll repeat the scrubbing bubbles/hot soapy water a few times until I can aquire some oil. I'll keep you all updated' thanks for the advice and fingers crossed!!

I've soaked and bubbled a few times now with no luck. I can see that there is a significant amount of soap scum or hard water build up inside the mechanism. Will mineral spirits break this down without hurting the plastic adjuster plate?

I've touched up several of those resin handles with a Sharpie, but I don't know if that will work on a handle that is so faded.

NO! I'm so disappointed in myself and the events of today!

I got some mineral oil and was going to soak the razor, but decided to hit it with some WD40 first. I did, let it soak in for a second. I then decided to take a pair of padded pliers to see if I could gently work the mechanism. I twisted and it finally broke loose!! The only problem is, the spring for the adjustment collar broke!!! Now it spins round and round with no resistance at all!! I don't know if the spring was bent and that's what jammed it to begin with or if it had some soap scum that bound it to the mechanism or what. Is there any way at all to salvage it or should she be laid to rest??

Since it was free I would lay it to rest. Unless you can find another for very cheap then send them both to Razor Emporium to salvage parts.

Awesome idea, i might have to look for a razor from my birth year now ;) (might be cheaper than a truck from my birth year, at least cheaper to restore)

I recently purchased a Super Adjustable as well that had problems and after much searching came to the conclusion that these models are not repairable. I found out that FatBoys and Slims are repairable but the general concensus on the Super Adjustable was no. Let us know if you find out otherwise.
