I bought a MT1 to store in my closet since it was the razor that started my interest in a DE razor. It seemed only right to have the razor that started my RAD.
I purchased a Weishi 9306 on Ebay for about $9 shipped. Very nice razor - gave to my dad for Father's Day. Would get this before a MT1
http://www.ebay.com/itm/251532514455?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 I got this one out of curiosity and have been shaving with it for the past 6 days. It is only $8.98. I am very pleased with it. It came with Dorco blades, but I am using Astra SPs and it works great. It took about 3-4 weeks to come from China.
I was also thinking that they looked just like super speeds....hmmm i may just have to pick up a Weishi and see how it holds up...
I own (and did a shave review with) the Wallyworld MT1 offering. Mantic is correct that you will not confuse it with Merkur, Jagger, or even Gillette. But it's a decent low end copy of a Super Speed, and it shaves pretty much like one. Mine is in my rotation. The blades that came with mine are Dorco ST300. Not a popular blade, but far from jagged, rusty pieces of junk.
I also must say, that the one I got at Wally World shaved pretty well! Now as far as how long the razor stays in one piece, only time will tell,,but I am happy with the razor so far..
Was my first DE. Shaved great! Still have it although it hasn't seen a blade since I got my first vintage razor lol
For about the same price as the Micro One Touch or the Van der Hagen, you can get the real deal - a 1950s, '60s, or '70s Gillette Super Speed. It will be heavier, sturdier, and even if it's nearly 50 years old when you get it, it will last longer than either of the new ones. There are plenty of them available on line, in antiques shops, and at garage sales and swap meets. If you're patient, you can get a nice one for $25 - or much less. I own about half a dozen, including a C-1 "Birth Year". They're so plentiful, I sent two of them to a new DE user as a "PIF" a couple of weeks ago, and over the years, I gave a several to friends as Christmas presents. I don't think I paid more than $25 for any of them, and most were probably about $10. Van Der Hagen 1957 (C-1) Gillette Super Speed Gillette also made black handle Super Speeds, toward the end of the model's run in the 1970s.
Misphit, you RADical, maniacal razor collector! You have a Krona, right? If''n you don't, you gotsa get a Krona! Yep! ... a Krona.
Well, after taking the plunge myself, I ordered one of the Weishi 9306-H models from eBay. I can absolutely confirm that they are identical. You can't tell them apart -- finish, size, weight, all identical. And they both even came with Dorco blades. If there was ever any doubt that these are the same razor, let it end now. So... Once my vintage razor(s) eventually arrive, I may be PIF'ing one of these. I was stoked to discover a new razor in my mailbox today... Then significantly less excited to discover that it was an *exact* match of the cheap CVS-bought one I already own. On the left, the MTO. On the right, the Weishi. The only difference is that the MT1 has a blade in it currently... It is literally the only way I could tell these two apart.
I cleaned up my shave den this week as I live alone and tend to just let it be all over the small counter. When I've got company, I try to put some of it away for a bit. Icouldn't find my Weishi anywhere! No idea where it's at. Fairly bummed about this as I was going to take it for my trip in October. I'm thinking shaving elves broke in and took it.
It could have been payment exacted by the shoe elves. Did you check your closet for improved footwear?
Not that I noticed, no. Maybe it was the Hairy Fairy coming to get a razor for his once a year shave.
I didn't see anyone mention this yet. My dad bought me back some Microtouch One blades from the States. Yes, Rick Harrison is on the packaging. They are Dorco platinum st300. Hey I tried them, and was not very disappointed.
I use the ST 300s that came with my MT1 from time to time. The work OK, but I can only get 2 shaves out of them before they begin to cause too much irritation.
