    Prep: Clear Essentials glycerin soap
    Soap: Mike's Natural, unscented
    Brush: Burma Shave with TGN synthetic knot
    Razor: 1956 Gillette Super Speed
    Blade: Personna Med Prep
    After: cold rinse, CeraVe lotion

    Good shave! I have had a mixed relationship with this razor. On the one hand, I love the looks of it, it is in outstanding condition given its age, and it is my birth year razor. On the other hand, I have had trouble getting comfortable shaves from the thing. I have tried to understand why, and the best I can figure is the light weight and balance.

    But today, somehow I found the right angle and pressure and it was great, comfortable and smooth. Maybe the Med Prep blade was a perfect match.

    Likewise, I love the looks of the restored Burma Shave brush, but I don't especially like the feel sand performance of the TGN synthetic knot. I got a good lather out of the Mike's soap, of course. But this knot feels scrubby and scritchy to me when I face lather with it.

    That razor looks like it was rhodium plated. Are you sure that is the original finish? Beautiful birth year razor.

    I believe it is original plating. I bought it on eBay, and it wasn't cheap, but I presume a precious metal plating like rhodium would have cost more. The plating color does look like nickel when it is side by side with other Gillettes. It is definitely a warmer color than my chrome razors.

    WEDNESDAY
    All-Righty Shave

    Well, my plan was to not attempt shaving until a few more days post-op, but since there's nothing wrong with my klutzy right hand, I figured it'd be a great opportunity this morning to try out my newly-received PIF Cadet from Gary. My first DE shave in several weeks, but I shook off the rust and put my right hand to use for the entire shave. Much easier, I discovered, than using the 'weaker hand' with a straight razor. Three passes, no blood, nicks or irritation Just smmmmooooth….. Astra stainless blades worked well with this mild razor, too. All & all, a very nice shave! Thanks again, Gary @GDCarrington for this nice little DE! just what the doctor ordered for this morning…..
    I suppose I won't have to go all 'mountain man' shave less for the next few weeks after all!

    Open Comb OCtober
    Razor: Gillette Old Type Open Comb Ball End NDC 1920s (from "The Weekender" by Metalfield kit)
    Brush: Erskine Badger 1947
    Mug: Old Spice (late glass Mug 02 1964 - 1978)
    Cream: Maca Root
    Blade: Feather (1)
    Pre shave: Tree Hut Shea body wash
    Post shave: Thayers Cucumber WH, Jack Black Balm, Old Spice vintage Shulton Lime

    The Gillette Old Type OC is a great razor,with some cool history coming from "The Weekender" kit which is very Art Deco. This is the only OC razor that I have and I pay special attention when I use it. It does give me some burn if I use to much pressure and I do not go over an area more than once on each pass. The pre shave Shea soap helps keep my skin slick in the drier weather. The Maca Root whipped up a thick lather and I screwed in the Feather, and checked the alignment and was good to go for my first pass WTG. A little rinse to see how we are doing and relather for a XTG pass on my face and ATG on my neck. No touch up and we are done. I can feel the burn, but a very close shave. Warm water rinse and pat dry. Some WH and after cleanup some Jack Black Balm then some OS Lime. I will have to use this razor more often, and work on my technique with it. Have a good one.

    The First of October
    or
    A Study in Scarlet

    Wherein we find the author plagued by irritation of the skin and soul, determined to never again allow a single-edged blade to reside in his den of solace and good fortune.

    ~~~
    It was a cool and crisp October morning when our author, an ofttimes discerning and gentle soul, awoke and promptly set out to fulfill his moral obligation and participate in his first open-comb October. Little did he know then that within but an hour's time he was to be crushed by disappointment and frustration, witness the waters running red with blood, and become a man on the verge of insanity.
    It began well enough. After a thorough and relaxing preparation, replete with tinctures and soothing distillations of pre-shave concoctions that would make the most extravagant apothecary swoon with envy, our protagonist proceeded to lather with a time-worn brush of spurious and obscure vintage, utilizing a soap of Turkish pedigree enjoyed primarily by those of the elite and cognoscenti. All seemed in order for a glorious and fulfilling respite from the vagaries of stubble.
    Upon the first stroke of the so-called blade, however, our intrepid adventurer felt something was amiss. Perhaps he had forgotten a step in his time-honored ritual, or perhaps the edge was not properly and securely affixed? He took stock of himself in the looking-glass and noted rivulets of crimson beginning to course down his visage.
    Angrily he spoke aloud, "Thou vilest instrument of torment, thou Summoner of Styptic! What hast thou wrought? Away and begone, foul bringer of blood, unholiest of implements!"
    Many hours later -- or perhaps it was mere moments, who can say? -- once the bloodletting had been staunched, the neighbors appeased and the local constabulary properly bribed and sent upon their way, our intrepid adventurer laid the tool of his self-inflicted torture to rest and returned once more to a reliable and pleasurable double-edged experience like those of his forefathers. He vowed then to unburden himself as soon as practical of the singular-bladed tools of despair yet remaining in his cabinet of alchemical and mechanical oddities, though it might well alienate him from those who relished and coveted such weaponry. Or perhaps passing them along to others more worthy would serve to endear him to those self-same compatriots. Nevertheless, he was at last at peace with the knowledge that he would not again experience such misery.
    Quoth the shaver, "Nevermore."
    Feels nice on my skin after a menthol shave, kind of a sweet smell. Not sure how much i like it. I am going to try putting some on my wrists so i can sniff it throughout the day. I can never really smell aftershave on my face. Is that Normal?
    Feathers are sharp. I just loaded up my razor when Wifey asked me to write something down. As I was doing so I thought 'Why ios ther blood on the paper?' I must have cut myself loading the blade but i never felt a thing. Still had a nice shave. First time with the Pils - feather combination. See how it goes but at the moment Silver Blues and Wilkinsons Sword are Battling out for best blade with this razor.
    A fun read. Sorry for your loss (of blood). These instruments need a low angle and a light touch. Also, the blade does need to be seated properly behind the blade stops.
