Challenge accepted! Disclaimer - those are EU/DK prices. I have no idea what, eg. the Nivea costs in US though I know it's cheaper. Now, were I to set up an adventurous newb with blood on his tooth, I'd get him the following, knowing he'd get top class shaves at a bargain. Gillette Rubie eBay, shipping included. Great Tech clone. $10 Bestshave #6 brush Online at Bestshave, shipping included. One of the best, at a bargain. $5 Arko shaving soap stick eBay, shipping included. One of the best, at a bargain. Substitute with another if scent is a killer. $4 IP sample pack eBay, shipping included. Great pack of IP blades. $7,50 Lathering bowl Local thriftshop and/or super market $2 Nivea for Men Sensitive after shave balm $7 In total $35,50 This is for cheapest only without skimping quality. If newb is serious I'd recommend substituting the razor with a Mühle R89 (add $33,66) to get something that oozes quality. But that pretty much doubles the kit's price. The rest I'd leave be. Razor aside (one can quickly outgrow the Gillette Rubie), I'd have no problems using the above kit on a daily basis.
Bless your heart. I don't get called out by anyone. I don't play that game. Offended much? I gave my opinion. That's all it is. If it doesn't suit you, there's no need to be rude about it. If I took your post wrong, I apologize. Done with this thread before things excalate out of the "gentlemanly realm".
Of course we are - watch any movie - the Americans come to the rescue. We American can be very self-centered. Of course, the following is meant in humor I will add my picks: Start with a Gillette Toggle - last seen on EBAY for $1500.00 Add some nice cheap soap - in this case Martin De Candre - Only about $50.00 each - Might as well get 2, the regular scent and the Fougere And a nice little brush for only$250.00 For a grand total of $1850.00
I would even suggest the idea of checking out Maggard razors and starting off with one of their creme sample sets along with a blade sampler. That way you aren't commiting to a product you don't end up liking and can get a chance to experience a little variety. Especially since sometimes the stuff your razor will come with my disagree with your face. Like when I got my razor at the art of shaving it came with merkur blades and I was scared that's what all blades would perform like!!
Wish I had seen this post before I bought my first set...perhaps I'll glean some of it for my second set. Really appreciate the online options because there aren't very good options in store where I live.
Welcome to The Den! Make sure you sign up for the newbie give away. ALSO... is you want to test the extreme low-end (or lowly!) Yuma, you might join the pass-around >here<. Glad to have you on board!
One Possibility is Gary's Sample shop sampleshop.blogspot.com/ where the sample kit, for 35CAD includes a vintage user grade or better razor, ready to use, and enough products to get started. Of course, I found this AFTER I started purchasing from ebay, walmart, vintage stores, drug stores, etc.
If you really want cheap, just go buy some cheap disposable razors and some canned goo. Or, better yet, disposable razors (I get a 5 pack for head shaving, have 3 blades, I think, Gillette brand) and a tube of Cremo Cream. Both can be had at Wal-mart and Walgreens. Total? If you go with cheap cream, less than $10. If you go with Cremo Cream, then I think it is $12-13. I'm looking for comfort and quality, not the cheapest I can get away with. My favorite shave? My Merkur HD with Astra SP blades, AOS lavender cream, my QED Select silvertip brush, and follow up with Aqua Velva Ice Blue. Total Cost? Can't remember right now - probably somewhere in the ballpark of $130-150.
