The drier air of winter seems to aggravate my dandruff more than usual. I have dandruff shampoo, but it doesn't always keep it in check the way I'd like. I'm using Selsun Blue Medicated at the moment, which seems to do the best for me, but as I stated, it doesn't work perfectly and it doesn't smell so great. I've tried conditioner and no conditioner and I don't notice a difference. So, my question is, do I have to suffer through with what I have, smelling like dandruff shampoo and living with it. Or, is there something that works for you guys that you would suggest? I'll try whatever, as long as it doesn't include goat urine and toe nail clippings. (Some of these natural remedies... Sheesh!) But natural ideas are fine if they work. Thanks for help and advice!
Lanolin or shea based products work well for me. I use shampoo/bath bars as I adhere to the belief that many "bottled" shampoos strip the hair of oils and cause flakey scalp. You may also want to give a shampoo bar like Liggett's with tee tree oil a whirl. I wash my hair exclusively with MWF bath bar. No more flakiness.
Oddly, I was at a coffee shop yesterday morning that had old print ads on the walls of the bathroom. One such ad was for Listerine and suggested that it will get rid of dandruff if you shampoo with it. I don't have dandruff or Listerine, so YMMV. Another ad said your anus won't itch if you use Scott toilet paper. That one I can attest to.
Ditch the commercial shampoos and switch to shampoo bars. See this thread for further info. SLS in commercial shampoos can cause dandruff, dryness, and even hair loss in some cases. In the meanwhile, you might try not shampooing at all and just letting conditioner sit in your hair for a bit and rinse it out throughly. This should clean your hair sufficiently in the short term and moisturize your scalp a bit too.
Unless your hair is excessively oily or soiled deeply on a daily basis, you do not have to shampoo daily. This helps to retain oils in the scalp. Barring a medical condition this may be helpful.
Well there is one other way to stop that dandruff issue that I use. It is called the "Totally Shaved Head" or the "Cue Ball Effect!" Shave your head daily and it is an absolute cure for dandruff. It worked for Telly and works for yours truly.
Wow! The advice available on this forum never fails to amaze me! What a helpful bunch of wonderful people. I don't have a dandruff problem, but you guys are awesome to come to the aid of The County Mounty. Rock on!
I never ventured into shampoo bars, I have a super dry scalp. I use Head & Shoulders Clinical Strength with a softening conditioner afterwards. Keeps the flakes at bay
Switch to shampoo bars for a couple months, I bet the dryness disappears or at least improves dramatically.
Read my thread referenced above for the full skinny. And of course, report back when you've tried one.
I've never had dandruff, but have had a few hair dressers tell me I have a dry scalp. I just started using Liggett's shampoo bar a few days ago and already feel like there's a difference in my scalp.
For some people, dandruff is actually caused by a fungus on the skin. (Thought the SLS in liquid shampoo can make it worse.) I found a shampoo bar that has no SLS, goat milk (to moisturize skin & hair ) and tea tree & neem oils (both natural antifungals.)This is the one I use.
I've resulted to a buzz cut, less hassle less dandruff. See a dermatologist, they can prescribe clinical strength medication.
I was just checking this thread to see if any contrarian viewpoints were being offered, stating that perhaps dandruff doesn't SUCK….a YMMV kind of thing. I'm glad (relieved?) to see none...
Mr. Rollah, I assure you that it does, in fact, SUCK! The flakiness and dusting off your shoulders all the time is lame, but it's having an itchy scalp that really gets to me.
I know, I sympathize. It's a terrible ailment to deal with. Many of use have dealt with it. My comments were mainly towards the typical contrarian opinion that often pops up in threads.
