What did we learn from our last shaves?

I learned carbon blades are not nearly as forgiving of using Ivory soap to shave with, as decent stainless blades are.

I need to work more on my lather with my new brush and to map out my face.

I learned I still have absolutely no idea what I'm doing so far. Sort of on tattoobobs note my lather is so inconsistent and some days I get good results and others not so much

Wet shaving is not one skill.

    1. Prep
    2. Lather building
    3. Shaving/Razor application
    4. Post shave care
    5. Equipment maintainence

I practiced lather making on it's own. It's one critical skill.

I've been using creams only since I started, and that seems to simplify one of the 5 areas. It might work for you too.

Do you bowl or face lather?

I've tried doing it both ways. It just seems way to thin no matter how much I try and whip it. When I bowl lather it looks good in the bowl, at least it does to me, but when I apply it it's pretty thin looking.

I do this too and get funny looks from the wife, but my boys like it because they get to use their plastic razors. Practicing building lather I believe is one reason I haven't had a cut or razor burn yet.
I face lather and really like this method.

The issue you are describing is probably an issue with the ratio of water to soap. It takes a bit to get this right.

What is your basic lather procedure? Can you post pics on our 30 day thread of the process and describe what you're doing? It's not hard to fix this, it really is a practice thing. :)

Awesome...don't ever let those boys us carts...;)

The lesson here is that lather building is a skill that can be acquired and practiced. Lather is very important. Our razor technique and athin layer of soap are all that protect our skin from the scraping of a hard steel blade!

    Gentlemen, from my last shave...

I learned realized that every move I make in my den is nothing more than an amalgamation of all the stuff I have read on this forum. Thanks for a great 2014!

I will tomorrow when I'll officially start my 30 days. I did something a little different today and it seemed to yield better results. I actually pressed my brush into the puck and loaded it for about 45 seconds. Then I removed the puck from the bowl which I never do and built lather that way,

    Three things:
    - The Gillette Ranger Tech '41 is now absolutely one of my top 3 razors - out of the 31-32 that I own.
    - That Nancy Boy shaving cream is my number one shaving cream, and
    - That Myrsol Blue (first time I tried it today) was as amazing - yet different - as the Myrsol Agua Balsamica. What an superb product.

    So yes, I had a top-notch shave today :D

I learned that not tightening down my 40's era SS results in lacerations... Oh, man... It got like hyper aggressive on me. Tighten down those doors or suffer! :ashamed001:
