He is more than likely utilizing the straight for most of the shave and finishing up with the DE. It quite common for most folks starting off with straights. :)

    Pre - Corn Huskers
    Soap - LiOccitane Cade
    Brush - LiOccitane Plisson Synthetic
    Razor - Frankerazor
    Blade - Astra SP(2)
    AS - The VEG

The glutton for punishment that I am, I used similar setup as yesterday besides using the VEG in honor of this current thread.
I have posted a review of the actual shave with the Frankerazor here.

    Dr Jon's Classic soap
    Plisson synthetic brush
    Mongoose with Dr Bomber handle

This is my second shave with a Dr Jon's soap. The first soap performed well, but I had some skin sensitivity. I am pleased to say that the Classic did not irritate my skin.

To me, this soap excels in two areas in particular: scent strength and slickness. There was no skimping on the fragrance here. Those that are huge fans of Barbershop scents will be enveloped by it with this soap.

The consistency of this soap is the same as Castle Forbes cream. It is more firm than TOBS cream, but probably the softest soap I have used. Because it is so soft, it lathers with ease without blooming it.

Dr Jon's is a very slick soap. I tend to use more water in my lather than many (certainly more than in people's "lather shot" photos of their brushes). Perhaps I should have used less water because slickness was exceptional but cushion wasn't quite as great. Don't get me wrong, it was very good, just didn't stand out like the slickness.

I used just a splash, not a balm, to evaluate post shave face feel. Here it doesn't stand out as much either. My lanolin soaps make for really tough competition, though (Cold River Select, B&M, etc). It didn't dry out my skin, but didn't moisturize much either.

Overall, it is a very good soap that I recommend adding to your list. If slickness and a robust scent are your most important properties in a soap, this one is a must.

    #30DayChallenge shave #5

Prep: warm wash and Cornhusker's Lotion
    Lather: Klar Kabinett (face lather)
    Brush: Vie-Long 13061M horsehair
    Razor: Gillette New LC
    Blade: Voskhod (5)
Post: cool rinse and Captain's Choice Cat O' 9 Tails

I looked in my box of razor blades and recalled that I have enough for around 8 years and remembered that I don't have to stretch each and every blade to 8 or 9 shaves, so this blade is done after 5 shaves. Not a bad shave today, just a little tuggy, so with the appropriate reverence and ceremony, I dropped into my used blade can after the shave.

    BOMBED William's menthol mug soap
    Gillette old ball end
    Pontiac deluxe(1)
    Muhle r41
    persona lab(2)
    geo w korn 5/8, I think it's hollow
    ICED Barbasol pacific rush
today's shave was a five pass fiasco. I started with some thick ole Pontiac blades I got from s yard sale. started ok, by second pass, butter knife dull.
I thought, I'll clean this mess up with a straight.
    two passes, still ruff.
    stubbornness
I pulled the r41 from the cabinet, loaded with a lab from earlier this week. final pass did leave me smooth, but itty should have never been this much work.
    finished with iced rush.
I'm sure y'all had to do better.

    SATURDAY
Last night's shave that I forgot to post…
A 'spice-filled' (pumpkin pie!) shave using my new 'favorite' razor. I've used this Wosty for about a dozen or so shaves and it has provided the best shaving experiences I've had using a straight razor.
Not sure exactly what makes this razor so different, but I suspect a combination of size and blade shape that just meshes well with my technique. Never any harshness, irritation nor blood—despite the spike point. I guess I should just be thankful to have found my ideal razor shape. :)

    Have a great weekend, everyone!

Paired the new R41 with an MR3 handle I just picked up. Good shave, but I need a few more before deciding whether I like the Grande handle better.

    Saturday!
    • Prep: hot shower, hot washing cloth
    • Brush: TGN a grade silvertip badger in Oscar11 handle
    • Soap: Cella
    • Razor: birth quarter Gillette Slim @ 4, 5, 6 & 7
    • Blade: Derby #5
    • Shave: 3-pass + touch-up
    • Post: cold water rinse, Floyd AS
One hades of a shave! BBS if there ever was one. I like the system of up-dialing the razor after each pass. The Cella lathered up great as usual, but I started with a dry brush. This badger sucks up so much water that the lather tends to get too thin. But boy, what a shave!

My first shave of 2015 and as good as they come!

Prep - Shower / Woods Of Windsor Cedar Woods soap / Pre-lather / 3 min steam towel
Razor - Gillette Fat Handled Tech
    Blade - Feather Hi-Stainless (#1)
    Brush - Omega 20106
Soap - Palmolive Stick / Glycerine
After - Frozen towel / Alum / Witch Hazel
    Result - BBS

First for Palmolive soap with glycerine added, which made quite a difference. Always liked the scent but found it drying. Never tried a Feather in the Fat Handled Tech before and it was simply as smooth and comfortable a shave as is possible.

I use the straight for my sideburns mainly. There are too many crevices and tricky spots for the straight razor, at least for my talent level.
