YES! I have decided that maximizing blade life can be counter to maximizing shaving enjoyment. I haven't adopted a two-and-done rule, but my bountiful supply of blades and my desire to try even more (and I am developing a strong preference for 100-packs!) means I have no reason to push any blade to the limits of comfort. I applaud your bold stance! Good on yer. ... and I'm right behind you.

    ;)

There 's not much reason for anyone else to go to Columbus. I found most of the good stuff. I got my hair cut yesterday in what is supposed to be the oldest business in Clintonville. Nice experience. I've looked at many straights but nothing has caught my eye. I did pick up a stone ($7) in a walnut base that I was convinced was a thuri until I started cleaning it. This thing was absolutely black. I've had 2 fine shaves off of it using it as a finisher. I really have no idea what it is but I do have a guess. If you have a swag let me know what you think. But if it is what I think, Ive never gotten an edge like that off that type of stone before. The real find was the History of the 2nd MarDiv FMF during WWII but it is a 2 volume set and this is the first. Way to much good food around here too. Have a good one.

Thanks. I was not the originator of "two and done", but with the drop in blade prices (last shipment was 6.4 cents / blade), it is much easier financially to just throw them out. I thought that virtually any blade could go at least 3 shaves. But for me there is a distinct difference between the second and third shave.

No need to get up your nerve. This razor is actually quite tame and effective. The best combination of smooth and efficient, IMHO.

SoTD for Thursday Feb. 5, or, the band played on.

    Pre- Clove balsam pso
Soap- La Pere Lucien bourbon Vetiver
Brush- Ever Ready w/ synthetic knot
    Razor- Gillette Techmatic
    Blade- Gillette Techmatic
    Rinse- Osage
    Aftershave- vintage (1941) Dunhill
    Lotion- Kiehl's
    Cologne- vintage Dunhill

Yesterday I finally got some original vintage Dunhill aftershave and cologne. This classic fragrance was originally formulated in 1934, but my bottles are from 1941. This stuff has been reformulated for modern sensibilities, so the original type is very expensive. $100+ is not crazy talk for a 2 or 3oz bottle. I got a great deal on these, I assume because of the novelty dice bottles. I decided to build a traditional, classy vintage shave around the Dunhill. I thought maybe I would use my Gillette Diplomat and a vintage Krona Chrome. But as I so often do, I got distracted screwing around in my den. Reorganizing, arranging, dancing to ska music, and generally having a grand old time. By time I got back to the task at hand, I only had about 20 minutes to shave. Oops. So classy went out the window, and was replaced by speedy. And the speediest razors in my stable are the bands. Last time I used a Schick Band, so today I went with the Gillette Techmatic. It was great, and provided a fast, smooth two pass BBS. But if I had to pick between the two brands, I think the Schick was slightly better.
So using the band, I easily had myself shaved with time to spare. I wrapped up with a selection of the usual suspects and the previously mentioned Dunhill products. And while the outcome of the shave process is ostensibly the same... a smooth face, a pleasant aroma and supple, well cared-for skin... using the Techmatic to get there certainly negated some of the satisfaction of the journey. I'm not saying it was bad, indeed, far from it. Just imagine that you had planned to spend the afternoon cruising around in classic wooden hull Chris Craft Corsair, but when you get to the water, you find a Zodiac waiting for you. You can still have fun. You might even have more fun. But the feelings you walk away with are going to be different. And thus ends my boat analogy. I hope your shaves went well, and that you stuck with your plan, whatever it was.

    SOTD - XXX double feature!!!

Yeah, I did that. Too easy not to. But this is the cleanest XXX double feature you will ever see. On my second day using an Razorock aftershave splash and I am liking it.

I love these razors, and I really want one of the Schick versions. There was a nice carded one on eBay recently. It went high. Really high. I got outbid at $128. I had auction fever. A couple weeks later it was relisted. Buyer never paid. I decided to sit it out, because I was no longer willing to go that high. my auction fever had passed. It sold for $18. I can't even tell you how mad I was. Oh well. There's always another one. You just have to wait.
