Scuttles or Bowls...that is the question. My scuttles do require more prep work and use a lot more water. They can keep your lather warm, however, I have experienced soaps that collapse when exposed to too much heat. It happened to me this morning with my Alison Hager Custom Scuttle: pictured below: Although the pictured lather was terrific. Here is a picture of my Dirty Bird Scuttle. It's bigger and heavier than the AH. But, for a quicker, simpler "bowl" lather, I reach for my Aesop Stainless Steel Bowl. No, it won't keep my lather warm, but the proportions are perfection. What ever you choose, the journey is worth the effort. Have a great shave!
I love my scuttles from Georgetown Pottery and Dirty Bird Pottery. Since I started using a scuttle I never went back to a bowl. No good reason to.
I also have a home made scuttle that I use every time....i have invested about $2.00 into it and it works like a charm...I am kind of a DIY'er and often look to repurpose things and I was at worlds market this weekend and saw that i could make a very nice one for about $5.00....I also just added the "webbing" pattern to the lather bowl of the scuttle by using a epoxy, that also works like a charm and really makes lathering better and quicker.
That scuttle was made by Robert Becker, who no longer takes order but sells scuttles on his ebay store. His site: Click here
I go back and forth between my dirty bird scuttle and ko shave mug. The scuttle is used more when I have the time to truly enjoy the shave and appreciate warm lather. Both scuttle and mug produce great lather but the warmth of scuttle is nice.
Someday I want to try a scuttle. I have a couple nice bowls that I picked up at Goodwill to use if I use a cream or puck or something like that. Normally I use Arko and just face lather! That could change if I ever get my hands on a scuttle though! Well, probably not but would alternate my routine to use one!
Arko is a soap that many wet shavers either love or hate. Most agree the performance is good, but most agree that the scent (odor) is off-putting. My Arko stick stays in my travel bag.
