I've tried AOS unscented pre shave oil once. Didn't care for it at all. Like glopping cooking oil on my face, and I didn't notice that it improved the shave at all. Tips or techniques on preshave oil or other preshave products?
Personal opinion is pre shave oil does not work for me. I use a lather of lather before shaving, rinse it off and then re-lather to shave.
Personally I LOVE the Proraso Pre/Post cream http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2172 but if you check out http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=54 you'll find a few and there might just be a winner for you there!
No help here, I love AOS lavender preshave oil. I tried T&H's but didn't like it as much as AOS. I will say it took my face a solid week to get used to it. From there on, it's been a great addition (especially on days when I don't have time for a full prep)
I guess this post can give you a hint or two also on how to perfect your Pre-Shave procedure: http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/showthread.php?p=43445#post43445
Sometimes I use Proraso pre. Most of the time I just do a hot towel prep and that takes care of my prep. The important step is to soften the stubble. Hot towel and hot water rinses work best for me. Raf
I used to use AOS Lavender oil back when I first started. Back then, I was still using my M3 along with the AOS and brush. For that system, it worked pretty well... then again anything probably helps an M3 shave Now with DE and straights, the best prep is a good hot shower to soften and moisten the beard. Oils don't do much for me in the pre-shave. After the shave, for touch ups, is a different matter.
I typically do not use a pre-shave beyond the standard wash of the face and hot shower. I have a bottle of Floid Pre-shave Gel on the way (from the TSD store, hint hint nudge nudge ) which apparently works rather nicely and might help my touch-up work. I have also heard that Trumpers' Skin Food works as a possible pre-shave as well. While I have never tried it, I am a HUGE fan of it as a post-shave and it is the ONLY aftershave I use. I believe I have been quoted before as saying that it could close the whole in the Ozone layer if given a shot, so I bet it can work as a pre-shave too.. :rofl Maybe I should give it a shot...
Not only did I give it away, I gave it to someone who uses a NORELCO!! Figured if he uses an electric, how could he possibly realize how bad Skin Food was. Smells bad, feels worse.
When I use AOS SC, I use the AOS pre-shave oil. When I use a different SC, I use Prep pre-shave cream. I apply both before AND after my hot towel.
This is critical to a good shave. The oils and other "tricks" ......not so much......but if they work for ya Knock yourself out. Me ? I like to spend my $$ on other stuffs. I have begun to use a facial scrub on my mug when I shower to lift the stubble. Seems to help some. I guess
I stick with a good face scrubbing before shaving and it seems to raise the hairs pretty well. For normal mornings I use Anthony Logistics glycolic facial cleanser just to clean my face out from the previous night and sleeping. And before a good afternoon shave I use Zirh alpha-hydroxy menthol face wash (called Clean) most days and Anthony Logistics Facial Scrub every 4 days or so to get all the dead skin off. Post shave I use Anthony Logistics after shave relief cream as a moisturizer and on a daily basis I use Zirhs correct/protect moisturizers. They keep my face soft as can be, clean, and blemish free.
my pre-shave ritual My pre-shave ritual: -in the shower, wash with Nivea Purifying Face wash, -wash/scrub with Nivea Energizing Face Wash (pumice-y, but for facial skin) -soak my face good with hot shower water -hot towel. I'm to the point now where the towel is so hot, handling it hurts my fingers but it's comfortable and perfect on my face. Towel stays on for about 3 minutes I soak my brush in hot water while toweling my face, and I lather on my face. I keep my brush really wet, and actually hold it and the shave cream tub upside down. I dip the brush in the shave cream. (This way, no water pools in the shave cream tub, and the shave foam is really warm) I like the wet shave cream as opposed to the really thick stuff. Would I be better thickening it up?
From what I hear its not good to use the pumice-ey type face wash more than once or twice a weak because its mainly used to exfoliate dead skin cells. If over used you'll wind up damaging fresh skin cells and doing more harm than good.
I think this may be part of the problem. You should have no air bubbles in the mix and no skin should be seen through. Can you show us some pix of your lather ?
pre shave I started using a toner and lotion before I shave and it works great and really helps my shave. first, I wash my face with a cleanser, while it is still wet I spalsh on some toner. I don't know what this does but it feels nice. After the toner I use a facial skin lotion. I spread it all over my face but concentrate on the beard area. Then I lather as usual. I don't lather in a bowl, I use my face and swirl the brush all over untill it is good and thick. Then I shave. The cleanser, toner and lotion are all from the same company. It is in Korea but it might be from another country. It's called skin food. The cleanser is mint and the toner and lotion are ginger. They smell like hell, but make my shaves better.
