Hi everyone, For starters, I'm new to the forum and happy to be a part of it. I've skimmed some of the threads here and have already learned a lot, and I look forward to interacting with everyone! Now I don't know much at all about shaving. I've been going back and forth between a Gillette Mach 3 and Fusion razor and Gillette sensitive shave foam for years. I'm confident that I like the Fusion of all of the razors I've experimented with, but I hate Gillette's shave foam. Plus, I've heard that it's best to avoid products that come from a can, because they often contain ingredients (due to the propellant) that damage the skin. So, I've turned here for some expert advice. I'm on the hunt for a shaving cream (it can come in a tube or tub or whatever) that's good for the skin and not too pricey (preferably nothing above $20-$25). I've read that one should not use shaving cream that contains alcohol, because alcohol dries out the skin, but then I read that there are good alcohols that nurture the skin, like cetyl alcohol. Needless to say, I'm very much in the dark and not sure what to believe. I just want a product that's going to give me a great shave, not empty my bank account, and be great for my skin. In the meantime, I'm going to use Cremo Creme, since it's received awesome reviews. I'm looking forward to what you all will have to say! Hope your week is off to a great start.
First of all welcome to the Den! If you have a Bath and Bodyworks near you I would recommend CO Bigelow shaving cream. It $10 a tube but there are buy 2 get 1 free offers frequently. It's a great shaving cream with menthol and eucalyptus.
I haven't used CO bigelow but its the same as Proraso and I love that stuff. But I always recommend The Body shop macs root. It comes in e tube and a tub. The tub contains much more cream. I love it!
Welcome to TSD! You might start a thread over in the newbies forum to get a nice warm welcome. I have a tub of the TSD wheat cream available thru the TSD Store. I really like it quite a bit. I have also ordered Palmolive cream from Europe thru ebay with good success. When I got it, it was about $3-4 a tube shipped. Target offers Pacific Shaving Caffeinated Cream, which I also like a bunch. Then there are shave soaps, which is another forum.
Hi! Local: CO Bigelow Kiss My Face The Body Sop Maca Root On line: The Shave Den Shop Too many more to mention!
yes to everything that is posted....i think you can get all 3 (with the buy 2 get 1 free) for around $25
Check out The Shave Den Shop not just for TSD creams. JoAnna stocks a pretty decent amount of samples of other brands, as well.
I would look at RazoRock, Stirling, Mystic Water. All excellent soaps that'll protect your skin and they have a multitude of fragrances, of or two of which are sure to please you.
Welcome to The Shave Den! You already have a lot of great suggestions, but I'll throw in one more. I like Taylor of Old Bond Street creams, particularly Sandalwood and Avocado. You can purchase a tub for about $15 and sometimes as low as $10 when it is on sale.
Welcome. Taylor of old bond street creams would be your best bet. Tons of scents and they are great performers. The best in my opinion is the avocado. You can buy them on Amazon.
Welcome! Since you're looking for creams I'm going to recommend Taylor of Old Bond Street or Prorasso. Either are easily available on Amazon and you can get one of each within your price range.
If you have a Body Shop at a nearby mall their Macca Root shave cream is awesome. It is in my rotation and gets used a couple times a week.
Hi Kolombo and welcome!! Shave crème? Say no more. One tube lasts me about 2 months or a bit more. It's loaded with Aloe and Vitamin E, and is my favorite winter crème. (but it's good any time) It's very easy to lather, very smooth and slick, and is exceedingly nice to the skin. You just can't go wrong here. If you've the time to search around, you can sometimes find a bargain price. Happy Shaving to you!!
I'm a huge Taylor of Old Bond Street and was recently introduced to Arko. Arko is a soap but you can form a lather very easily. Welcome to The Den! Lots of good people and good advice here.
Hi an welcome. My personal opinion is that some people get too worried about what some specific products might do to their skin, and they tend to listen to some myths instead of an specialist. The thing with alcohol, depends. Yes, an after shave with high contain in alcohol will dry your skin. The thing is that it will evaporate faster, and also help the water you already had on your face to evaporate faster. But that's the point. In creams, on the other hand, there is not so much point in using a lot of alcohol. You will find linalool, that's used more for the scent, and, most probably in low concentration, so it will not have too much effect. Same goes with aerosols from canned stuff. They can be bad, but mostly if you inhale them. I can tell you that i never sprayed canned foam directly in my mouth, for long periods of time, so i don't worry about them. The bad thing about canned foam is that you have an fixed water concentration, as you are intended to use it directly on your wet face. So you can't really adjust that value, as you do with classic cream or soaps. You might be able to use canned foam with a brush, and add more water, but it kinda defeats the purpose. Another thing when using a brush and a cream, is that you get with the brush under your hairs, so you will apply the lather better than just with your fingers. My favorite cream is Palmolive Classic. Low priced, i get good results with it. It's on the market for a wile, i trust this product. You can also try Nivea. I personally did not used, i will surely get a tube when i remember to. I trust many Nivea products. About being "good for the skin", most of them are. They are tested before they hit the shelf, no big company will risk putting an harmful product for sell, as it's a fast way to reach bankruptcy. Some of them might contain something you are allergic too. It can happen. If you are allergic to almonds, it would be good not to get almond scented creams. Just go into a market and have a look at available creams. Depending on your location, you should find few of them. They should be low priced, as they are universally sold, something in terms of $3-5. Just get one of them and see how it will work out. I honestly suggest you to stay away from "luxury creams", or "natural" ones. Just start with whatever is universally available, like Palmolive or Nivea. Most of them are easy to lather and they provide good results.
