Picked up this razor for $14 and haven't been able to find a lot of information about it. If nothing else it looked cool...and I decided to take a bit of a gamble at that price...then again I was also the only one bidding so maybe that should worry me At first I thought it was a mismatch with the handle but I found one thread here where a couple of people reported seeing/buying the same head-handle configuration. Normally I don't see this handle on a DE razor. Looking for any information people out there might have. Thanks!
After scouring the internet a bit more I found another user's version of this type of razor. So they are out there but I can't seem to find any information about them
I have one myself, I've seen another version of the handle without the knurling on the edges. As far as I know it's basically just a Star version of a Gillette tech.
That seems to be just what it is. I am expecting a rather mild shave. I rather like it in gold and with that handle so I'm happy with my $14 investment I think.
I have a Star DE with the more typical pineapple handle. It is a quite mild shave. However, the razor is sensitive to how tight you crank the head down! My first shaves were excellent (though mild) and then I must have gotten a little excessive loading a blade. I hated that shave! Then I read here somewhere about not over-torquing. Looking at that handle makes me wonder if the good folks at Star weren't following a common GE practice. I've seen that handle on SEs for sure! Think they had inventory to use up and slapped some on the DE head? That's my guess.
Looking at the photo of the underside of the top plate I would guess that mine will be Zamakish as well. Still, I do like the look of it quite a bit.
I posted the same question over on TSR and Paul added some great information and photos of his own there.
If I was still buying I could have picked up this one - a matching silver one for my gold one. Unfortunately (fortunately?) for me I am not buying any more https://www.etsy.com/listing/230491...2&ga_search_type=vintage&ga_view_type=gallery
