Replacement for vodka in aftershave recipes

Hey ladies and gents who make their own aftershave

I have seen some recipes that require vodka, but it can be a little pricey and I'm trying to get around it.

I have some isopropanol that's 99% alcohol, I have made my own aftershave with it, but I have diluted it of course.

My question is, if I mix 50/50 water and the isopropanol do I get a concoction that's similar to vodka?

 

I believe you'd want to use something called Perfumer's alcohol, not iso. People use vodka because it's usually easier to get than Perfumer's alcohol. If you don't want alcohol you could use witch hazel if that's available. Also, send me your printer's email and I can send you some old family aftershave recipes.

 

I think the rubbing alcohol is a different type. I would just buy a cheap hlf pint of vodka

 

Alcohol is alcohol unless you intend to drink it. 70% iso should be fine.

Of course, a nice white rum would work too.

I actually have a minor in chem, not that it matters these days. But, I remember fondly almost getting blown up by a lab partner on grignard reaction day in Organic with the TA who didn't speak English. Ah... those were the (scary) days.

 

Monopoly on alcohol beverages makes it a little expensive. If I'm not drinking it, it's a waste hahaha

It coulda been bad, but at least I was paying attention to that particular reaction even if my lab partner was too busy doing her nails (true story).

The barely English-speaking (Chinese) TA was very scary. He could not communicate clearly to save his life. We ended up speaking to him in broken English just so he'd sort of understand. I'm sure he knew his stuff, but what good is that when you can't communicate directions and procedures, especially where the potential for bodily harm exists?

 

Search perfumers alcohol. You may find a supplier domestically. Isopropyl smells funny regardless of %.

I thought Texas alcohol laws were weird. Sounds like they're draconian in your part of the globe.

That's how y'all pay for your "free" health care. You're paying that much for something that only cost pennies to produce.

Is that so? But isn't rubbing alcohol around 70% alcohol, how do I get it down to around 40%?

 

Just my guess, I would maybe try diluting it 50/50 with witch hazel. I can't believe the vodka price there. What about a cheap rum?

 

The cheapest was 350ml for 13$. I might be able to find it cheaper.
