Remember I told you one more trip thru the entire wet sanding routine would make a huge difference. It truly is better in person than the photos so I know you'll like it.
wow I'm very impressed. it looks amazing. @clint64 I have the high mountain 24mm/67mm. I'm ready to send it to you whenever you're ready. beautiful work
I second the vote on his nice 400 touch should be in his ct, yo mods @HolyRollah, @RaZorBurn123 @Queen of Blades
I received it today....and...it's stunning. Ok, enough posting these photos - but I am just really excited about how it turned out. Thanks again @clint64
I was considering "Last movie you've seen" and some "It's your birthday"-thread but decided against it Yeah, it's such a nice design - too bad that the prices are just sky high these days.
@david of central florida sent me a message and we spoke back in mid April about me helping him with restoring his Rubberset 400 unmarked. He had some other projects going on and said it would be awhile before he got his knot for the brush. After a delay with the Post Office his package arrived this afternoon. Like a kid at Christmas, I had to open the package and see the brush. Common sense would suggest that I should just put this aside until my back was a little better. But common sense and patience are not really my best attributes. I wanted to at least get the collar unscrewed. I did take a break for a bit and spent time with the family to eat. Knowing there was only one more step before sanding and if it went well would only take a few minutes, I decided to remove the old knot. If my back gets better I hope to put some more time on the brush this weekend. But at least the project is started and going forward.
I have never really had a problem but I am always apprehensive after reading other peoples troubles. I tape the metal on the collar to prevent scratches. I have a small vice that I use for working on pistols and such that I have added plastic jaws to the face of the clamps. Given the shape of the bottom portion of the handle I just drop in in the vice and gently tighten it down to the plastic of the vice is in between the raised portion of the handle. Using a strap wrench I then turn the collar off. The collar should come off.
It is important to note that the 400 is cast aluminum and as such it does have small imperfections or inclusions in the castings. As you sand and polish you will notice very small spots that are imperfections in the casting. I am not sure if you can get all of these sanded out because as you get one right another opens up. After hours of sanding and polishing, I am very pleased with the way @david of central florida handle looks at this point. The brush is done with the exception of making the shelf for the knot and setting the knot. Honestly those are the two easiest steps of the process. In all honesty, this was the worst 400 I've done in terms of imperfections or inclusions I've have worked with. I am ecstatic with the way this handle has turned out. I only hope that David is equally pleased. Before Pic. Ready to set the knot.
50 should work well. but I'll leave that to you. you have way more experience with the 400's. I trust your judgement. I'm totally pleased, it looks amazing
WOW. That looks amazing! Welcome to the 400-club @david of central florida How is it possible Clint's CT is not "400-Magician", "Rubberset whisperer" or something along those lines?!
Ok, will do. I also pre-washed the knot to start removing that wonderful badger funk. I try to get it set by tomorrow afternoon. It should be back in your hands before next weekend . I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed getting it ready for you.
