World Tournament of Blades - Russia vs. the World!!
    June 20, 2015
Prep - Hot shower and towel
    Brush - VDH Boar
    Soap - Arko
    Razor - '59 Superspeed
    Blade - [IMG] (2)
    Post - Alum, Nivea Balm

Last bracket of the Russians in the Quarterfinals and it's the Sharp Star up again. This blade has intrigued me since first discovering it and it continues to rank among my top blades. So, here we go as it goes up against the Ladas. VDH Boar and Arko for the awesome lather and the first pass was nice and smooth. The blade seems to have kept its sharpness into the second use and felt great. Lathered for the XTG and it went well too, but maybe not as close as the first round. However, it's in a different razor. Finished with ATG/G-slide on the neck with a very nice DFS and called it. I might have gotten BBS but I didn't want to overdo it and add irritation for no good reason. A point is a point so let's lose it on the finish.

Scoring - Sharpness, still a 1. Smoothness...a 1 though maybe not quite as perfect as the first round. Still no issues. Irritation, hit the alum and just the slightest of twinges so a 1 there. Finish? DFS is a 2.

    Total - 5

Matches the Voskhod but is not perfect this round as it was in the first. Difference in razors or is the blade perhaps not as good with use? We'll see in a few days. The Ladas tried to beat it tomorrow! Hope your Saturday was a good one...mine was busier than I would normally like but after a week of rain everybody was ready to look at cars!

PRESHAVE: Face wash with soap and warm/hot water
    RAZOR: ATT R1 / MR1 handle
    BLADE: Platinum Lux (new)
STRAIGHT: 9/16's Dubl Duck Special No. 1 (1st try)
SOAP: Soap Commander "Blue" (2nd try)
    BOWL: VDH
    BRUSH: Tweezerman Badger
POST: Rinse with warm/hot water to get soap off and then some cold water rinses/splashes and pat try.

Comments: Okay so today I received this straight as a loaner. I wanted to try it out because the blade is only about 2 1/4 inches so I was curious how that would work. I did two passes with the straight without any issues but did end up with two small weepers, one in the neck area (tough spot for me) and one at the chin area (another tough spot) and only slight irritation. The shave felt pretty good and what I would call a CCS at least. I could have quite there but there was some touch up to do around the neck, jawline and chin areas to complete the shave in my opinion so I used the ATT R1 and did a pass to finish it off. This soap is the second tryout with it and is very good soap! I had no issues with the lather as it lathered easily and pretty good amount of it. It gave me plenty of protection or slickness so I don't think it was the cause of my irritation! Shave was really good today!

Please feel free to leave comments on any items used as I enjoy reading them to see what others say about the gear I am using/trying out! Of course, YMMV!

    Thx.

Prep: Hot facecloth followed by homemade lavender pre-shave oil
    Soap: Sterling Bergamot Lavender
    Razor: Fendrihan DE
    Blade: Feather
    Brush: Omega Boar Bristle
Aftershave: Hot facecloth followed by Lavender Witch Hazel
    Aftershave balm: Shea butter
    Mustache Wax: Badger

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! This is the second of several shaves using my new selection of Sterling Soaps....and it was a pleasant one indeed! I will call this my "lavender shave experience" -- the lavender pre-shave oil, the Bergamot Lavender soap followed by the Thayers Lavender Witch Hazel was indeed like bathing in a sea of lavender. The soap was wonderful. It performed very well and made my skin feel great. And (bonus) I can tolerate the scent...so add one more to my list of shaving soaps. Nice way to start the Summer Solstice. To all the fathers out there...enjoy your special day! :happy108:

Just now I had an awesome shave. I'll admit that the Gada Cool Mint cream feels non-mentholated compared to the Glacial, in fact even compared to Rod's other less-mentholated soaps but it definitely does have enough menthol to be felt. It's wonderful stuff which I love. The Anherb/Aqua Velva duo felt so good afterwards.

    Sunday:

Prep: Hot shower, Neutrogena Invigorating Face Wash, TSD Jasmine Sambac preshave balm
    Brush: Simpson 56 Best Badger
    Soap: Stirling Glacial Obsidian
    Razor: Merkur 41c 1904 OC
    Blade: Bic (4)
    Passes: WTG, XTG, ATG (7, 8, 9)
Post: Cold water splash, Bloc Osma alum, Dickinson's WH, Pinaud Clubman AS splash
Cologne: Le 3e Homme de Caron by Caron

The best lather I've ever produced with Stirling contributed to the closest shave of the month. What was different? I'm not sure. I used the bloom water to produce protolather, used a wet brush that wasn't quite 'Marco Method' level soaked, swirled the Simpson 80 times rather than the 40 I take on other soaps, and bowl lathered another 60 swirls with more pressure than I probably typically use ('probably' because I was making a conscious effort to press the brush a bit). The lather was good enough at this point that I didn't need to return to the puck, and that I was confident in going ATG. It produced a little alum burn at the end, but no weepers or irritation and nearly BBS results.

    RazorGuy Shave!

It passed too much time since I last made a shaving soap. Simply too much time and I regret that. Yesterday I took my pots and scales back to work and made a new shaving soap. I modified and improved a very old recipe of mine - in my opinion, the best I ever made at those times - and the result amazed me immensely. The soap performs the way I wanted it to be: creamy, thick, velvety, with a moisturizing effect on the skin, last but not the least, easing the razor's sliding on the skin. I am very happy with the soap I made and, although I am thinking about changing something in the recipe and making technique, I got an incredible smooth and comfortable shave. For the occasion - and this was a special occasion - I wanted to use the very best, the most beautiful and exclusive razor I have in my collection: Mastro Livi CarboInox Snake Razor and I guess I could not make a better choice. An incredible razor, giving the very best shave and, by the way, a great soap supported by my pre-shave oil and my Thyrrenus after shave. A superb RazorGuy shave!

    6/21/15 - Happy Father's Day!!

I got the Catalyst from Gerry Johnson at Shavingsamples.com in my monthly Top Shelf Subscription Box. It's really good stuff!! The glycerin settles at the bottom so you shack before using. Instead of the usual cooling menthol feel I'm used to, I felt a warmth. Then it settled into my face feeling soothed.
Has a cologne scent to it. So great for going out on the town with.

The Goodwill is a great razor. Made between 1931-1935. The diamonds in the cap actually hold the blade very good. No adjusting needed.
