After several months of shaving with cream/soap with a brush, I have not even considered going back to using the crap in a can. I have two cans at home that I'm planning on using to test for vacuum leaks on distillation systems. I does perform wonderfully for that For the record: I prefer soaps over creams, but YMMV.
I will never go back to canned goo!! If I shave in the morning I usually use a cream.....but if in the evening and I have time....I use shave soap. Soap or Cream is fine with me!!
It doesn't take me too much longer to use the soap with a brush. It does seem to irritate my skin a lot less, and lets the razor slide easier. I started using soap and a brush a few years before changing to DEs because it worked better.
I consider my wet shaving daily as "me" time to pamper myself and indulge in the tradition of my father and grandfather. When my father explained shaving to me as a scruffy faced teen, he said this is how his father shaved and he always wanted to be just like his father, that really sunk in and I never wanted to shave any different than my dad. He never had all of the choices I have now in scents, soaps, creams, stick, brushes, razors, blades, on and on, but I will never change from tradition DE wet shaving. No cans, ifs, or but about it.
If I was to use a can I would be missing out on buying brushes. ...I really like purchasing different grades of badger, different bristle brushes, different knots, different lofts, different handles...... what brush will I use today, which one tomorrow... shave soaps, well glycerine, veggie or tallow? Which scent.??. Wow, I can't wait till tomorrow to shave again.....
Brush and soap/cream is the only way to go. You have an extensive option on brushes and a huge array of scents with various formulations. Not everything modern (i.e., canned goo) is better. Think of the environment and your face. Remember, the point of wet shaving is about enjoying the shave and selections - not about how fast to do it.
For me it comes down to a combination of factors. I find the quality of the lather with soap/cream and brush is very different. Yes, it takes a bit more time, but it is all part of the traditional old school shaving experience. I do have some creams that are the consistency of hand lotion (they don't lather) ...and they produce a good shave, but I always go back to soap puck and brush. For me it is worth the extra time and effort...and yes, there is some nostalgia involved as well. Everyone is different and you have to find what works best for you....and when you do find it, it will be right!
With good prep and technique I find Barbasol gives me just as good a shave as a lot soap & creams I use with my brush. I enjoy the "luxury" I get from using a brush but I feel the benefit lies in using a DE razor. I regularly use Proraso, TOBS, Tabac, Arko and many others and get great shaves with them. However, I find myself reaching for Barbasol about 5X a month and get great results with my favorites being the Yellow & Menthol varieties. As with all shaving issues, YMMV but Barbasol will always have a spot in my rotation.
I used to use either Barbasol or Edge. The switch to cream and then soap was like night and day. I honestly don't think the canned goo did anything for me. It sure didn't give me the smoothe, slick feel while shaving a nice cream or soap brushed on does. That leads to less irritation and a happier face.
I'll give you one very good reason: It's more lubricating for your face to build lather - especially with creams like TOBS that contain glycerin. Your skin will thank you ;-)
So do you think the brush is more important then? Still using my stockpile if pre-DE Barbasol foam but hadn't thought about the brush-hair-standing bit.
I think it's more important, for me and how I like to shave. You may find your opinion winds up different than mine.
Fair enough! I'd like to try out some creams (and my sampler pack came with some soap as well), but I've still got like 12 cans of foam to use first... Don't want to try the soap yet and love it only to still need to kill 12 cans lol
"Old-school" soaps are free of propellents that are dangerous for the environment--and your skin. Plus the exfoliation that occurs whilst face lathering is great for your skin.
The stuff in the can is much drier than a well made lather with a brush. It has to be light and airy for the propellant to work properly. The brush made lather is wetter which helps hydrate the beard (a wet whisker is easier to cut than a dry whisker) and slicker which makes for a smoother shave. And as mentioned before the brushing action surrounds the whisker with lather helping it to stand up while smearing the foam on your face with your hand just plasters the hair to your skin.
