Kaloderma shaving cream 2.99 cdn $ and I was lucky enough to find a tube of The Real Shaving CO. Menthol shaving cream for 3 cdn $ at the dollar store...
Many thanks for all your suggestions. Here is what we have so far for soaps/creams under $5. I make no promises regarding quality or performance…obviously YMMV. Also, there may be local soaps from around the world that may be in the under $5 range…sorry if I missed any. And you may find soaps on sale. If my calculations are correct you could outfit your shave den with 20 soaps/creams for under $100. Arko Williams Nivea Original Shave Cream. Pyrate Cove shave soaps Barbon Shaving Cream Figaro Shave Cream Coate’s Shaving Cream Rose of Bulgaria Van der Hagen Kiss My Face Shave Cream Palmolive Classic Shave Stick Speick stick Derby Shave cream Kaloderma shaving cream Mama Bear Soap puck Wilkinson Sword stick De Vergulde Hand" stick. I have used Williams for over 10 years. It was always what was I could get at the store in town so I used it. I always had a thick lasting foam with it. just takes more water then you would think. I'm starting to branch out now with some Proraso but the Williams will always have a place in my bathroom cabinet.
the price does eliminate a lot of soaps, creams that are a great value but these are a few that could be found for around $5: Ogalalla Lime and Peppercorns (or any other scent they make) Mama Bears Gingers Garden samples Stirling samples and pretty much any samples now that I think about it.... that would be a great way to find out if the product is something you would like without spending a lot of money.
Sad to say but I have become a soap snob. I won't waste my time on cheap soaps. Tried arko and vdh and although they work, I prefer middle to high end soaps. For me the experience is better and less frustrating. MdC, MWF, TFS, L'Occitane Cade puck, Mikes and Tabac is my rotation. MdC (about 55 w/ shipping) and TFS (22 bucks), the rest are at 10-15 bucks. I started this obsession to save money, but found out I want to enjoy it more than save a few pennies. I do save money on blades however, Ladas or Astra SP cost me about 1 buck a month. One of the great things about the hobby, more than one way to get enjoyment. Again opinions expressed are solely that of dbersh, and does not reflect the opinions of TSD and its members!
I have a stick and agree! Well worth the $8 I paid. I was unaware that it could be had for less. Thank you for enlightening me
I hear you...I have a few soaps that made the under $5 list and they get the job done. But I do tend to gravitate towards the finer (i.e. more expensive) soaps/creams on my shelf. On a per/shave basis some of the expensive soaps/creams are still very inexpensive. And if you had a choice between driving a Ferrari or taking the bus...the choice is simple. And I don't mean to knock any of the lesser priced soaps/creams. And we all know there are those that are fiercely loyal to their Arko, Williams, etc. That's the nice thing about this hobby...everyone can share in the journey but still walk their own path.
A really useful thread, thanks. +1 Boojum, Palmolive Classic shave sticks available pretty much everywhere but Palmolive Classic shave cream sells in my local pharmacy for £1.95, also comfortably under $5 mark. I'd also recommend Ingram shave cream at the same price (used it for years, amazing Menthol zing) but tried Palmolive recently and find it lathers better. Regards, Chris

Yes but discontinued in many if not most places by all accounts, so maybe not so easy to source, but if you can still get it its fantastic esp for the UK price of 50p Cream wise WARS & LIDER from Poland come in well under that price just over $1 with the conversion rate if bought in Poland that is, not sure of exact price out side of Poland but should be under $5
