I tried OC once I had my base technique down. I actually prefer the OC razors in general when I have a choice. I just find they work better for me with less irritation. The Gillette New Long OC is by far my favorite vintage DE razor.
I got this razor in June and started traditional wet shaving in October. In reality, I don't see any major difference in OC to a bar type, so I say if you are interested, go for it. This one in particular is pretty mild, but still provides a good shave. I have aspirations of trying a vintage Gillette OC at some point, though.
Razor: Gillette Executive (1960)(6) Blade: Gillette Platinum (5) Brush: WDC-4, Silvertip Badger, Butterscotch. (VIG) 24/67 Cream: Lea Classic Bowl: Old Spice Blue Mug A/S: Lucky Tiger Day 7 Kept the Executive on #6 today and got a good close 2 pass shave. I will go to #7 tomorrow. The Lea Classic Cream (got it in a PIF) which I used for the first time tonight worked up an excellent lather. I'll use it again tomorrow. Lucky Tiger is my got to A/S if I stare at the aftershaves to long.
August 7, 2015 Adjustable August Slim-apalooza 30-Day Focus - Gillette Slim Adjustable Morning shave. Hot Shower Pre-Shave Oil: Gingers Garden Soap: Catie's Bubbles Mile High Menthol Brush: Omega Pro 48 Razor: Gillette Slim Adjustable Blade: Gillette Silver Blue (1) TSD Witch Hazel After Shave: Myrsol Limon Mustache Wax: Dirigo Blue Settings: 7 - WTG 7 - ATG No touch-up or repeat strokes. This is as much about technique as it is about finding the best settings on this razor for me. The shave was better on the Slim today in that the significant feedback of yesterday was less so today. I’m inclined to think that using a new blade today helped and that the 3-shave blade of yesterday was mostly the culprit. The shave was also the very close. I will go up to 8 on my next shave. Cheers! RT
Well Herm - first and foremost you are a trained observer. Second, you appear to sense either a perceived personal peccadillo of mine, or perhaps a flaw in the manner in which I refer to people in my life and some sort of identity conflict. Third, I assure you that my SO and SWMBO, Mrs. F., along with who/what you think Mrs T may be, are all one and the same person - my wife of 29 years. Your confusion lies with your probable inaccurate assumption of my user name. ***SPECIAL 30-Day Rule/Focus TSDenizen PIF*** Solve the mystery behind my user name and the reference to Mrs. F. Prize - valuable shaving gear from me, Rufus T. Eligibility: must be presently enrolled in a 30-Day Rule/Focus, OR have done one before on a TSD 30-Day thread. Contest duration remains open until solved. Hints provided randomly on this thread at the discretion of Rufus T. :hooray: Good luck one and all!
August 8 Shave 6 I had a gift certificate for a department store so during Friday lunch I stopped bye to see if there was anything to buy. I have been interested in the Santa Maria Novella shaving cream but between the price and shipping it was just to much to take a flier. In the past the SMN stores here did not carry the cream, but yesterday there it was! Just $58, I guess it was priced on the exchange rate a couple months ago. So no shipping and my $10 coupon I went for it. So it is featured in today's shave. I did a test lather of the SMN last nigh and today was the first true use. It took me a while to get it to the yogurty consistency I like for a SR shave. The menthol took time to build and it was reasonable cold by the end. It was slick, protective and decent aftershave feel, it is just the first use to so to early to make a call. I did three passes and everything went well except for 2 operator errors. A small cut on my ear (no idea how that happened) and one false start with 2 steep an angle. I am focusing on reducing the irritation and using less pressure. No DE 4 pass today just a minor clean up on my chin with the SR. Final results light irritation and DFS. Only the second time a true DFS with a SR only shave. Day 6 - 7 August 2015 30 Day Rule - Phoenix OC Day six and I will call this blade done. I was able to get a good shave, but had to work harder for it than in previous days. The La Toja is performing flawlessly. The alum was super quiet and I had near BBS after two passes and some touch up. Finished off with some Clubman for that barber shop feeling. Visiting with family on a warm evening out on the prairie. Other than that...all is quiet in Colorado. Have a great weekend!
One of my favorite exchanges between Groucho and Chico in Duck Soup: Rufus T. Firefly: Awfully decent of you to drop in today. Do you realize our army is facing disastrous defeat? What do you intend to do about it? Chicolini: I've done it already. Rufus T. Firefly: You've done what? Chicolini: I've changed to the other side. Rufus T. Firefly: So you're on the other side, eh? Well, what are you doing over here? Chicolini: Well, the food is better over here.
Second shave with the Slim set on 3. I was in a lime mood, so I started with the usual Proraso preshave followed by Colnel Conks lime soap. Traditional 3 pass shave and touchups, followed by Proraso preshave then Gables Lime. Another bus with little irritation. I just got in some TSD soap, vanilla, and some more bomb among other things, so I am excited about Sunday's shave. Seeing the soap is still glycerin, I said nothing about menthol, and my focus is on the Slim and what settings work best for me, I don't think I am falling out of line with the focus...
