It's an advanced technique by @mantic along with buffing and J-hooking. You can check out his video on them below.
By the way it's somewhat impressive you had that picture ready to go that fast. Impressive and perhaps a bit troubling.
8/15/15 SOTD (Shave 9 of this focus) One and a half days’ growth Prep: Hot shower Razor: Ontario Cutlery Co. 5/8 (Muted) Spike Point Strop: Drygulch Chromexcel/ Linen Soap: Barrister & Mann Bay Rum Brush: Omega 1066 Boar Post Shave: Cold Water Rinse, Alum Block, Thayer’s Witch Hazel Aftershave: Barrister & Mann Kyovu After Friday’s shave I took this razor back to the stones to see if I could make it smoother. Since I was already doing that, I sanded it and polished it a bunch more. Looks better, performed better too. Still not quite as sharp as something that @HolyRollah sharpened, but pretty good. I was shaving late, so I didn’t want any menthol to wake me up. B&M soaps are awesome, once you get enough water in them. My Boar makes short work of them. The aftershave is soothing, but I don’t like the scent. It is very soothing though. Razor was smoother, but still required more pressure than I like, which lead to some irritation. Due to the amount of pressure needed on the WTG pass, I also did an XTG pass, and an ATG pass, with a bit of touch up. Face, jaw, and chin are BBS. Neck is just shy of DFS. I didn’t want to use that much pressure on my neck. Going to go another round with the hones, and see if I can get this razor to where I want it.
I particularly enjoy photographing the Phoenix. You're really producing great shots of it! Neal might mean this... Oh wait, wrong leisure suit.
Why do you think he nicks himself so much? SR urban choreography is hard. That's right. Disco. Get with it.
1959 E3 Gillette Fat Boy Vulfix Super Badger (660) Georgetown G12 Scuttle Proraso Sandalwood cream Aqua Velva Ice Blue Shave #2 with the Gillette Silver Blue in my '59 Fat Boy set to 4. A nice, smooth, very comfortable shave. 2 Full passes: Pass 1 WTG on my face and XTG on my neck. Pass 2: ATG. I had a bit more stubble remaining this morning than yesterday with Astra SP in the Gillette Old Type. For touch up, I lathered the left and center of my neck and my left jaw. I used J-hooking on my jaw and blade buffing on my neck. I felt no stubble on my final rinse. Aqua Velva was a little noisier this morning than after my Old Type shave, but not too bad. It did cause some stubble to jump up, but after the A/S dried I was left with a smooth result. Another BBS shave from the Silver Blue. Very enjoyable. Today took a little more time and effort to get the BBS than yesterday with the Old Type, but less than what I've seen with several other blades. I'm thinking of raising the setting on the Fat Boy tomorrow to see if I can reduce the required touchup. Two other difference I noticed between the two razors: Audio feedback and the ease of finding and maintaining the proper angle. I'll have to give the edge on both of these to the Old Type, but YMMV.
Thank you for your kind words! I love photography, unfortunately I was not really gifted with composition or visualization abilities, so I have to rely more on dumb luck to get a good shot.
Phoenix Comparison Focus Day 15: Homemade PS Oil Stirling Synthetic Brush Williams Mug Shave Soap Fatboy Stirling Unscented PSB Aqua Velva AS Off and running on the next razor up in my comparison: the Fatboy. I am not sure, but I don't think I have shaved with it since I did the focus on it a few months ago. During that focus, I found I like it set more aggressively, so I am going to use it at 7 for this focus. This will provide a lot of contrast to the other razors to this point as all have been on the mild end of the scale. Today's shave was great, just as I remember from a couple of months ago. Nice and efficient. I could tell the aggressiveness was kicked up a bit on this razor, but it felt good. I now sitting here with a DFS+ as I get ready to head to church this morning. Hope everyone has a great Sunday!
Saturday's Birthday Focus Yesterday's shave with the Exec on 5. I find that in 6 or higher I seem to have trouble finding the angle, so I think 5 is my sweetspot...all I feel is blade when it's higher. Now I may play with some other blades to see if there's a difference (of course, I have to order some). Used the soap that my sweetie have me earlier this year, just to make her happy. It's OK, but extremely floral. Nice BBS shave that lasted all day while we goofed around all day. PS: Thanks you for all the birthday wishes, I really appreciate it!
08/16/2015 Razor – Gillette New Deluxe Blade – Gillette 7 O’clock Yellow (3) Brush – Olivewood with TGN Finest Fan Lather – Mystic Water Lavender Post - Witch Hazel & Fine Platinum The Olivewood with TGN Finest Fan whipped up a great lather with the Mystic Water Lavender soap. Three passes later with some touch ups in my trouble spots provided a near BBS shave. Supposedly the 15mm base on this New Deluxe is more aggressive than the New LC but I really have a hard time telling the difference. Both are very efficient and comfortable razors to use. Finished off with a splash of Fine Platinum to end a great shave. Back to the Slim for next week's focus. Hope everyone has had a great weekend.
