Nice! In addition to all the other vintage pipes I see, I noticed the MacArthur cob in the back. Do you smoke it much?

Dracula? Who was wanting a Peterson Dracula? Well, I was, until today. Got a chance to run by The Briary this afternoon, with plans to pick up a Dracula. Their inventory of Draculas was down, and the only straight rusticated was a billiard. Peterson makes two billiard styles, and this was the larger of the two. It felt clunky in my hand, and I was getting cold feet. Then Skip, the owner, asked me and another customer that I knew, to step into the back part of the store. He pulls out 3 boxes of pipes he had recently acquired, one of them being some virgin Chacom vintage pipes that were 50 years old, some a bit more. I picked up two straights, a chimney style, and a Canadian for less than I would have paid for the Dracula. I found an identical Canadian used estate pipe online that was listed for $100, but never saw anything comparable to the chimney. Working on my first bowl in the chimney right now, with some Sam Gawith FVF. They're pictured with a unique leather pipe holder I also picked up today.

Skip, the owner, assured me the Chacoms were superior to anything Peterson was currently producing.

Here's the chimney in the leather holder. I've been wanting a Canadian for a while, and the chimney is different from any of my other pipes. I'm happy with these. Great quality briar, they're very light with perfectly drilled draft holes.

Nice! Like I said, I worry about Petes smoking hot, not so much the Chacoms. You said you wanted a Canadian, and poof, there it is! Loving them both. Congrats!

Love those big bowls. Can't wait to hear how they smoke!

Ido! I usually smoke my pipes in Fall & Winter..., Spring & Summer I lay-off! (Which is the reason they've become SO-DUSTY!) I smoke Virginia Tobacco in The "MacArthur." I like to puff on it while gazing through our 'big-window' window during snow-falls. It's a handful of Pipe..., but I like it as much as I do the others! :bounce017:

The bowls aren't as big as they look, it's just a close up shot that makes them look bigger. I finished the SG FVF in the chimney in about two hours, partially due to sipping as slowly as I could to help with break in, and partially due to the FVF not being as dry as I wanted it. Bowls like these, somewhat tall and not as wide, beg for a flake. But I really picked the wrong one. In spite of the long duration of that smoke, the pipe would sometimes get hotter than I would have liked. I attribute that to the constant relights, and working to keep the FVF burning. So with trying to cool the pipe down, yet keeping the burn going, I didn't really enjoy it like I wanted. But I chalk that up to the FVF, not the pipe. I've left the FVF open in a jar overnight a couple of times, looks like I may need to spread the flakes out, or maybe even put them in the oven for a few minutes.

Try spreading out just enough to smoke the next day overnight and see how it goes. I sometimes have to do this with stubborn flakes (I'm talking to you, Peterson University, lol) and it works well. I usually use an old tin opened to do this. Remember, it's much easier to remove moisture than to put it back in, and if the whole jsr dries beyond your liking, that might not be a good thing, but one bowlful is worth the experiment. Enjoy!

Yes, I agree with you that moisture is easier taken out than put back in! While I have successfully rehydrated some tobaccos, I do believe it can dry to the point that I think the tobacco loses something. That's just my opinion. It may have moisture restored, but just isn't as good as before sometimes. I like your idea of leaving just one flake or two completely out of the jar overnight.

Golden sliced is superb for breaking in new pipes. Those are beautiful briars, I love those shapes!

This is why we make friends with our local tobacconists... Nice score!

    Earlier today....

    Orlik Golden Mixture
    Danish Crown 951 (vintage)

I am running some OGM through this pipe to clear it a bit. I used it for Three Nuns and Irish Flake, and I am seeking to de-ghost it a bit before I trim the cake and give it the monthly scrub.

Leave it on a plate on top of your fridge. The heat from the compressor and the moving dry warm air will speed it up. Yes. I realize I said the fridge.

I saw that. I picked up a tin of Golden Sliced this afternoon, along with a tin of Lane's 125th Anniversary tobacco, a Virginia blend but can't remember off the top of my head what all is in it. I should have gone for the Golden Sliced. It'll probably be on tap for tomorrow in the Canadian.

I think Golden Sliced is a benchmark Flake. Like Escudo. Classic stuff. Have you tried it yet?

Not yet. I got one of the large tins in my last P&C order, then today I picked up a smaller tin at The Briary. I am looking forward to getting into it, probably tomorrow. Sure wish I had used Golden Sliced this afternoon instead of FVF.
