30 day Focus - Day 16 MDC Lavender Face Lathered Rapira Stainless Blade (Day 2 on blade, Day 4 on Rapira Stainless) Slim Adjustable set to 8 3 passes Somehow I skipped posting yesterday. Oh, well, today is another day. 3 passes and very smooth. I think I may like the Rapira Stainless a little more than the Rapira Platinum Lux. It seems just a touch smoother.
The Grand Save King is a vintage razor. The modern Phoenix appears to be modeled after it. I cold see how somebody could call it a double OC. It was called "self-lubricating" because it leaves rows of cream behind for a subsequent pass. They are nice performers.
I hadn't seen a picture of the GSK in a while. The gaps in the Phoenix are much larger than in the GSK. Interesting to see the difference.
I just had to check out the Bay for GSK razors. They are proud of them. There is even a listing asking $100 for one missing the base plate. Is the razor in your post your razor?
Yes it is. I got it as part of a lot where the seller didn't know what it was. I recognized it from his picture and got quite the deal
It shaves consistently well. It does better with some blades than others. I have never used a Phoenix.
Shave 7 16/08 Pre: Village Barber Soap: Wickham Super Smooth Bay Rum Brush: Semogue SOC Badger Razor: Kai Excelia non folding Blade: Kai Mild (1) AS: Old Spice Noir Started off with the Feather Proguard but it felt tuggy on the first couple of strokes. Swapped it for a Kai Mild. Very close shave with a few weepers. Maybe due to the nrw blade. Hopefully the next shave will be better. Face felt a little sore afterwards. How many shaves are others getting from theses SE blades? I was hoping to get into double figures at least with the Proguard.
Thanks. Now I know what to expect. I have read some are getting double figures with these SE blades in their Mongoose and Cobras. I rotate so often that I forget how many shaves I get and usually change blades when I feel it tugging.
to be fair, I used mine for about a month and a half, and went through all of three blades, but I don't shave every day. I would say go by feel.
Day 5 of my "30 Day Focus" on my Schick E2 I have been holding this razor the same way I hold my 1955 Hydro-magic...Thumb on one side, middle finger on other side and my pointer touching the back near the head, which make minute changes as to pressure. Today I adjusted this hold....Thumb on one side, third finger underneath the tip to lift (equals minus pressure), and my pointer and middle finger on the opposide side of handle from thumb...So there is no pointer applying pressure... I acheived 2 beautiful, irritation free passes... I also did a slight deviation from the Focus Rules....my first pass was a bit of a 'Shave Off'... Left side Hydro-magic/Right side E2 = Left side, WTG....Right Side, full blown BBS..... Shave Off Results: both are SUPER performers....E2 indisputably more efficient....H-M a softer shave needing more passes to acheive the same result...
I ordered my first Injector, a G, so I know what my September focus will be. It will be difficult to hold off using it until then.
Razor: Gillette Fat Boy (1961)(5) Blade: Gillette Platinum (1) Brush: WDC-4, Silvertip Badger, Butterscotch. (VIG) 24/67 Cream: The Real Shaving Co. Bowl: Yokohama Studio (Hand Painted) (gift from my Wife) A/S: RE9 Postshave Balm Day 17 What a great shave this evening with the Real Shaving Co. cream and the Gillette Fat Boy. An outstanding feel with the larger handle and even at #5 I have DFS. Learning my way around shaving creams thanks to the Adjustable August and my added focus with creams. I am finding that some creams have a more lubricating feature than others. When you have finished a pass and you water up to add more cream you can almost shave without adding more from the brush. In theory. Have a good Monday night.
