Well our ancestors weren't that far apart. My lineage is mostly Irish with some Dutch thrown in.

That really is a nice stand, and I like the cleverly hidden tobacco jars. Didn't you recently order some pipes on a special deal at P&C? 3 for $50 or something like that? If I'm remembering that correctly, I'm looking forward to seeing that rack filled up.

Thank you! I was really excited when she brought it over. Currently it just holds my Macqueen Ranger as I haven't placed a P&C order yet. I had to pick out some tobaccos as well, lol. I did decide to grab some Comoys #1 and Balkan Sasieni, as Latakia at least sounds good to me, and the Comoys has virginias and orientals mixed in it says to sweeten it and balance out the smokiness. I did however also add a tin of Orlik Golden Sliced. I see you gents smoking it a lot and it sounds so good, I just had to. Will be my first real foray into flake tobacco, so I hope it goes well. Also grabbing a pound of bulk aromatic per my usual; leaning towards Mac Baren Vanilla Creme. I love good Vanilla aromatics. Right now I'm smoking some PS #6 Sweet Vanilla from my Big Ben knock off. It's a really great tobacco, mild taste and a great room note that kind of reminds me of fresh baked sugar cookies with a good dose of real vanilla in them. Sweet, but not overbearing, and everone seems to love the smell.

Awesome! Don't think I am trashing Latakia, it's just not my thing right now. Orlik is a great value, I think you'll like it. It naturally sweet, raisin-plums tin note, citrus tinged smoke. It's actually unflavored. And it costs the same as Captain Black. It's sold in every gas station in Denmark like Marlboro in America.

Orlik is a very easy tobacco to rub out. When you wanna try some, let the flake sit out for an hour, then crinkle it up like a piece of paper, and place it between your palms. Rub your palms together slowly and let the broken tobacco fall onto a plate or something. Repeat until it looks like Capt Black in the pouch kinda pieces. Pack into a bowl allowing good draw. If you pack flake too tightly, it won't stay lit. This method works on pretty much everything except Lakeland Flakes, they actually are more work, like 1792. Danish flakes (Orlik) are much thinner and more pliable.

Thanks, that's some good advice. =)
I also plan on trying some the old "Navy Way", where you fold the slices, and make somewhat of a plug that you press into the bowl. I saw a video on the Mac Baren site where they show how to do it that way. They said it allows different depths of flavor to come from the tobacco, if you desire to put in the little extra effort. <shrug> Nothing ventured nothing gained right?

Any pointers on how to get the 1792 smoking right? I did rub it out well, and it was already very dry when I got it from @txskimo ; but I'm having the same problem he did, where it simply refuses to light and/or stay lit at all. And I don't mean like standard relight won't stay lit. I mean just plain won't stay lit, lol. I do kind of like it's flavor when I can get it lit a bit. It's quite peppery and spicey, and the tonquin is even somewhat noticeable and pleasant to me. I feel that if I could just get it to burn right and not be so harsh and bitey, that I may well rather enjoy it.

I do Orlik folded and stuffed when working outside because it produces less loose ash, which is hazardous in dry and windy Colorado. I agree it also tastes different, but mostly because there is more tobacco in the bowl when not rubbed out. Google "air gap method pipe smoking", it's yet another way to smoke flake.

On 1792... Lakeland Flakes aren't really my thing. I am not good at keeping them lit. @BamaT smokes Lakeland, he might be better able to advise.

Ok, so it's not just @txskimo and I who have that problem. Makes me feel better, lol. Any pointers @BamaT ?

Not at all. They are known as being not only more dense than most flake, but thicker and a much higher water content than Danish Flake..

I can't even get mine to stay lit when it's as dry as an old tumbleweed, lol. I did notice though that when I rubbed it out, it was a lot thicker cut than other tobaccos I use. In fact, upon holding it up next to a piece of Skandinavik, I can see quite a stark difference.

I had the same issue with my tin of Gawaith Full Virginia. There are just so many tobaccos in the world, I guess not all of them are for me.

So, I had to go ahead and change my order with P&C a bit. I kept the Comoys Cask #1 and the Orlik Golden Sliced, but put the other stuff on hold to instead get a Customer Appreciation Pack! It comes with a briar pipe, pipe/tobacco pouch, combination lighter/pipe tool, cleaners, a bunch of tobacco tins (looks like at least 5, maybe more), AND a free "surprise goodies" bag. I'll order the other pipes and tobacco this weekend or early next week. For now, I wait like a kid for Christmas! lol

I like the sound of that Appreciation pack, getting a pipe, pouch, tobacco and other goodies. That'll give you another pipe to add to your rotation. I've got to run right now, but I'll get back on tonight on the Lakelands.
