  1. With a little patience I have found some really nice injectors on eBay for a bargain (really, just a week or two of waiting.) That looks like a nice G1 you've picked up. Enjoy your SEptember!

  3. well, this recent discussion has pushed me to finally ask for some advice on injectors. I have yet to use one, but have obtained a few and, along with some identification help, perhaps some recommendations? I am keen to try all or most of them during SEptember.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Cheers!

1 -Could you please help identify or confirm these 5 below?

    3 back.JPG
I'm pretty sure of these three. from L to R : Schick I2, J3 and a PAL Adjustable?

    G back.JPG
    I believe this is a Schick G1 ?
    US Pat. 1806087, 1961945

    E Front.JPG
Not sure of this one. Made in Canada, Patent 1937

2 - I'd probably try one each week in September. Should I try them in any particular order?

    3 - Blades
How many shaves should I expect from a blade?
I respect the YMMV theory. But your thoughts on the following blades I have:
    InjBlades.JPG
    Schick
Eversharp Hydromatic (that came with the I2)
    Personna - USA

  4. I forgot to update on my shave with my injector....these things are great shavers...I still like my gillette adjustables but if im in a time crunch I will use my injector...gave a great shave and it did it in less time, really think injectors were a amazing design.

  5. Yeah, I think you've just about nailed it Sir....The I 2 Hydro magic & the J 3 Golden 500 are more or less the same Head in that they have the Opening Lever which is known as the Hydro Magic Function to rinse out the head....These two injectors are the Mildest of your collection and the most user friendly of the bunch....These are later models as you probably know and as you move through the Schick injector timeline they did tend to get milder....These are very user friendly, very smooth & forgiving.......The NOS Personna & Schick blades should both work in these fine....

The PAL Adjustable is probably the most aggressive beast that you have here....These are different animals from Schick injectors....They are not as intuitive to use and they are a thinking mans razor for sure....I would suggest using this on the second setting to start with and see how you get on with it.....These shave differently from Schick's in that you need to put the head flat against the face and then lift the handle a bit to find the blade.....I have never felt the need to use mine past the three quarter setting....These a very aggressive injectors but very smooth and they will offer the closest Deepest BBS Result of your life Sir.....NOTE>>>I would strongly suggest that you use your Chinese Schick Blades in this injector as the NOS Peronnas are very harsh in them and that goes for current Pesonnas as well..:p.

The Type G 1 that you have is sort of middle of the road in terms of aggression .....These are the next step up in aggression from the I 2 & J3 ....They demand a wee bit more focus than the later ones, but they are quite forgiving and smooth shavers.....I would suggest using a Chinese Schick blade in to start with then try a Personna.....The Chinese ones are far more forgiving....That said.... both blades work really well for me in this particular injector....;)

The bottom one is a Canadian Type E....The Canadian E types do not seem have a recorded typology like the USA Made ones....For Example ...Type, E1, E 2, E 3, Etc...That said I happen to know that you have a Somewhat Rare Canadian Version of a Type E 2 .....This is an early type Canadian Type E that was probably made around 1937/1938....It can be identified by having an off centred spring and a smooth comb...This one does not open as it has a nub on either side of the spring....I don't have one of these but if it shaves anything like the USA Type E 2 it is it one of the most aggressive Types E s ever made.....The Type E 2 can ofer a nasty cut when provoked...NOTE>>>I would strongly suggest that you use your Chinese Schick blades in this one as here again the NOS Personnas are quite harsh in it as well as current ones.....

I would suggest using them in the order of aggression.....The I 2 & J 3 should shave the same and are the mildest and a good starting point....The Type G 1 would be the next logical step and then the Canadian Type E......The PAL Adjustable is a funny one as you can have it on a Mild setting....But I would probably leave until you have played with the G Type....:p

The Chinese Schick blades that you have at the top are the most user friendly blades you have there...They are very sharp but very forgiving.....The ones you have below them are Eversharp blades by the look of it and in my experience they offer a rough ride....To be blunt about it.....They are Junk....The NOS Personna blades you have at the bottom are very nice blades but less forgiving than the Chinese ones.....Just make sure that they are ok to use as they may have been out their package for a long time....Just give one a try...If its a Dud you will soon know...:D

These are my Own Experience's & Perceptions of Course ...:angelic007:

  7. Thank you Sir....The funny thing is that I have only ever seen another One of those Canadian Type E 2s ....It surfaced early this week when someone was asking about a problem with it....I always knew that they had to exist but the only Canadians E Types that I have seen or own until this week all have a Centred Spring and Ridged Combs....:chores016:
  8. "I Hope this helps"

    Oh my.
Billy I have been reading your posts for some time, as I've been accumulating these razors and trying to educate myself. I find you to be direct, concise, incredibly informative in all your posts, and most appreciated of all - very generous with your time.

But you have out done yourself this time. This, for you sir, is clearly beyond a hobby. You have a passion for this. This is one of many things that attracted me to TSD. I am in awe of people like you, but you are one of a kind!

My posts can be somewhat wordy, and I would generally have follow-up questions for my posts - but not this time. You have provided me with everything I need to know about these razors to get started. I thank you to the fullest. I look forward to reporting my experience back to you.

I cannot express it any better than @Darkbulb has :
    Bravo sir, and thank you.

  9. since I only have 7 blades and probably wont have any money for more since I started a new job I think I will use both my shavette and the injector I got. I'll keep the shavette with Wilkinson swords all month and trade off at some point into the month for the injector. That gives me time to clean it before the month starts.

  10. Billy, I just re-read your response to @Darkbulb about the Canadian E2.
My photo-taking is not the best and I can send additional photos if you wish, but...

The comb on this razor is not a flat surface. It does not have uniform parallel ridges either. The surface is a 'roughened' one with ridges but not uniform. The lines of the ridges appear irregular in length. I will try to clean it up and take better photos this weekend if you wish.

Thank you for you're kind words Sir... :)

I have gleaned a lot of information from people whom have shared their knowledge in many Forums and I am glad that I can put something back that people might find helpful...There are a lot of folks on this particular Forum that are very passionate about what they do....I am glad that I found the TSD Forum, thanks to Darkbulb, and all the folks here that me make us welcome....;)...

I forgot to mention that when I am not using my PAL Adjustable that I store in the highest setting as it takes the pressure off the adjustment mechanism spring and hopefully it will keep it healthy....

Glad to hear you found something useful and it would be pleasure to hear how you get on with your New Found Injector Journey ....:p
    Enjoy Sir....:chores016:

  12. I have had a closer look at all my USA made Type E 2s and mines are the same although some are smoother than others depending on the gold plating quality...What you are seeing is more like a factory brushed gold plated finish running along the comb....The Type E 2 1941 has a rough kind of bubbly Finnish as well....These were the smooth comb version compared to the definite ridged comb...That said.... Yours could be a Hybrid ....;)

A pic would be great though....:chores016:

  13. You're welcome, the kind words were earned and deserved.

I agree I have found much passion about shaving from many members here. It is delightful to see people passionate about things that bring positive reactions from others, especially when done with humility.

I will of course store the PAL adjustable as suggested. Though I did notice that this one did not come with a blade already in the razor.
But the funny thing is, I only went out and looked for one because I read a review you did of one some time ago!
(So it better work well for me!) ;)

Actually, it may sit on the shelf for a bit longer and not be used this month. I really feel a need to adjust to shaving with injectors first and develop some sound technique before I take on a beastie like that one. I'm not afraid of it, just respectful as you've described it.

    Thanks again Billy!

  14. You are welcome Sir...:)

The PAL Adjustable is nothing to be afraid of with correct blade in it Sir....It can be as mild as you want it to be....The Schcik Type E is the one that is more likely to offer a nasty cut if you provoke it Sir.. .:D:D.....The PAL Adjustable never caught on for a number of reasons...PAL & Personna which are part of the American Safety Razor Company were making ground breaking Injectors at that time...The PAL Adjustable was a way ahead of its time and the general public were not ready for it as it takes more than a tad of intelligence to use it....Its a very subtle razor in many ways and a lot of folks apparently cant find the correct shaving angle with them....;)

In addition, Gillette at this time copied the Personna Floating Head 11 Injector design and started making and mass producing pivoting head cartridge razors that were very easy to use.... Yeah, I would probably shelf it for a moment until you get used to easier to use injectors and then pay it a visit....:p
Sound like a good plan Sir...:chores016:

  15. Sounds like I should have the E2 join the PAL on the shelf for later.
Either way, my plan to start out SEptember is the two Hydro-matics-Magics first and then the G1.
Depending on timing and technique development, I'll consider the E2 and PAL afterwards - hopefully to at least try them once or twice before the end of the month-long focus.
    Thanks again Billy

  16. I'm a bit confused...Were their both a Hydro Magic and Hydro Matic razor?
  17. If there's any confusion, its probably my injector-newbie error. I believe the correct term is Hydro Magic.
    (this is how i learn.):)
  18. That is a common mix up when writing and speaking about these versions.

All lever action Schicks carried the name Hydro-Magic.

    http://www.renaldo.us/SchickRazors.php
  19. The Hydro Magic wasn't stamped on them all...The Golden & Silver head models had the rinsing lever before they called it the Hydro Magic...For all intents and purposes all the models that have the Lever that opens them for rinsing is essentially the same design ...;)
Schick referred to them as all models with "Rinsing Levers"....:chores016:
    Billy
  20. Well good! I won't have to find a Hydro Matic version to feed my RAD.:)
