My focus for the month was my birth year Slim. I wanted to find out what blades and settings I preferred in the Slim and by mixing in some vintage Gillette OC razors on weekends see which I prefer. One of the things I noticed right away this month is that my DE blade of choice has changed a great deal since starting Labor Day 2014. At that time, I picked Lab Blues after trying several different brands. In the beginning Feather DE blades were pure poison for me. The worst ever. Times have changed, Feather Blades are now my favorite DE blade for me with the Voskhod a very close second. I did really enjoy the 7 o'clock blacks and yellows as well. I quickly found for me the Slim is a set it to 9 and forget about it razor. I was somewhat surprised that even with this setting the Slim is just not as efficient as the New LC for me. I had some very good to great shaves with the Slim this month. Without reading back thru the entire thread, I don't recall having a bad shave with the Slim all month. Overall the Slim is a very good razor that has given me consistently good shaves this month. However, I just seem to prefer the 3 piece DE razors. Perhaps they just hold the blade more rigidly. I am glad that I participated in August Focus. I have learned a lot about my shaving and picked up numerous tips to improve from reading the posts of the the other participants. I am truly in awe of the guys that us SR and the progress that they have made over these many months. I hope everyone has a great weekend.
Day 27 - 28 August 2015 30 Day Rule - Phoenix OC A nice leisurely two pass shave today! Alum was good, and decided to go with a different TSD exclusive AS. Perfect weather under blue skies today! Other than that...all is quiet in Colorado. Have a great weekend!
Oh well that's usually my luck as well. On the bright side, everyone should own at least one SE razor.
I got an injector in the case and 7 blades for less then $20. it was not really what I wanted but I wanted to try out injector razors and SE so I settled for what I could afford. next I'll try to find a gem in decent shape.
August 28 Gillette Slim G3 (9) Feather blade (2) Edwin Jagger XL Synthetic Trumper's Coconut cream and glycerin Two passes plus touch-ups Thayer's Lavender witch hazel, unrefined shea butter, and Trumper's Coral Skin Food
Well, enough is a relative term, isn't it? One is good for SEptember, but it isn't necessarily enough to stop buying... (See me previous post about my calculator breaking )
Here is a photo displaying the differences in curvature and geometry between the FatBoy and the Slim. The Slim was based on using the same silo doors as the Super Speed as a cost cutting measure and placing them on the adjustable baseplate assembly. To many people the difference is not pereceptable, but to others it is. I hope this helps.
Welcome to the group! I just sort of followed everyone else's lead on this thread and it worked out fine!
I'm going to finish out the weekend with my August Focus. Then, on Tuesday, I'll move into my September Focus. I'm going to try a SE September and focus on my 3 SE razors. I've used them only sparingly and really need to get to know them better. I believe I have an Eversharp-Schick Model J injector (top), an Eversharp-Schick Model G injector (middle) and a STAR SE (courtesy of @Omaney). Total cost of all 3 razors was $12. So here are my September tools.
Haha. I've got a year or so under my belt and a couple razors in my collection. :-D got the bug and started acquiring. Need some more soaps and creme though. Hopefully I can contain myself in the future.
Sorry I haven't posted in a while, but the focus on the Slim continued none the less. It's been a good focus, and I did figure out the razor for my face. For every day shaves, it's a xtg / atg 2 pass shave on 4. If I skip a day, it's the same 2 pass shave on 5. I grew to love this razor once I got it dialed in! Smoothe, little to no irritation and on 5 or less, the Styptic pen stays in its sleeve. Next up is my later model (67 I believe) ball end focus. I'm going on vacation next month so I want to keep the focus on a razor I'm familiar with, so no SEptember for me. I'love give my Gem a try between focuses, but I'like save a Gem focus for October, which may be more appropriate seeing as there may be blood, lol! Anyhow, now that this focus is almost over, I'm glad I participated, and look forward to more!
I'm in agreement with your assessment of the Slim. Great razor, but I also prefer three piece DE's. I like the Superspeed and Aristocrat TTO's, but prefer three piece over those as well.
Great write up! And I found it quite interesting to hear your comparison side by side of the two razors. Awesome stuff! I must warn you, however, that such devotion to critical thinking and figuring out new ways to compare and test and devise scenarios to learn something and all of that leads to a terrible side effect for some. If you find yourself suddenly AAACK!!ing up a hairball, I warned you. The fact that I see your devotion to breaking it down scientifically resonates with me. I tend to have the same curse. Can't wait to see what you discover in the coming month my friend.
