Shave Report # 1 So, this morning I had the maiden-shave w/ the Schick Type F. As I stood there in front of the mirror and lathered up I couldn't help but to feel that I had summoned up @Billyfergie as I started to saying things like "this is gonna be the dogs danglies" and picturing odd dog-walking icons I mean, I don't even know what 'dog danglies' mean. All very odd. Anywho....lathered up some Vie Long shaving stick soap....which was so bad I immediately switched to Provence Sante (great soap btw) and picked up the, now, shiny Schick. During the first pass I'd say it was an 'ok' feeling razor. It was milder than I thought it would be - I don't think I could have nicked myself even if I tried. I had a good two days growth so it had some stubble to work with and it did a very fine job. Quite honestly I was pretty much fully shaved after one WTG pass. Second pass went equally well - and I ended up with a very smooth, clean shaven face. So, what's the "problem" then? Well, no problem per se....I think I might have had my expectations set unrealistically high. It's a very good razor...it's just not, to me, an exceptional razor. It kinda shaved like 20 other razors I have. It's hard to be disappointed in getting a good shave but I think I managed to achieve it. That. Might just be the dogs dangliest thing ever.
I do plan to use it a few more times if I decide if it goes into the sell-bin or not. Still - I stick by that I think it's the most visually appealing injector razor I've ever seen
See after having to work hard with a lot of other razors, when one comes along that does the job so efficiently that you can almost get a one pass shave, then the flaw is that the razor does too good of a job. Try an XTG pass first and see if you can get the absolute one pass BBS shave! If you achieve that goal (and I have done that before) you might just change your mind, or maybe you have a desire to put more work into your future shaves.
Hmmm. I'm saddened and at the same time I'm excited! I'm saddened this legendary razor did not live up to your expectations. I'm excited that there still is hope.
WTB Schick Type F Prefer one that has been used, well-cleaned, well-photographed, nicely and honestly reviewed and is no longer a go-to razor for its owner. Send PM. (Yes, very funny, I know. But I'm not really joking)
No, I wouldn't say that the razor did 'too good of a job'. It did a very good job. It just didn't live up to my probably unrealistic expectations. I can get a clean shave in one WTG pass from probably 20 or so of my razors and some of them, highly subjectively ofcourse, 'feels' better during the actual shave. As I said, its very hard to be disappointed in a razor that did a very good job - but with so many other razors that does an equally 'very good' job I had, for one reason or the other, hoped this would feel like one of the very best ones in that group. I will however, of course, keep using it this week and I'll try your XTG pass first and see how that feels. To provide some attempt at context to the above - razors where I get almost clean shaven in one pass AND that feels exceptional during the shave are for instance; - M. Peroni, - Mongoose - Wolfman dual-comb - Tradere OC
I do believe my expectations were set at an unrealistic level. Out of the 100 razors or so I have. I could name the top 10 right away that I will never part with (but I'll keep that list to myself for now ). I was hoping that the Schick F would immediately jump into that little group. Who knows, maybe it will by the end of week. We'll see.
I completely understand as I've had the same expectations with soaps, and a couple of razors. Hang in there, one shave really isn't enough to make a sound decision on whether or not it's for you. I tend to put stuff away and revisit in a couple of months. 100? I think it's closer to 300
I don't shave anything like every day, but when I do I am a BBS Shaver....The F Type for me with a three passes leaves me with NOTHING UNTOUCHED and my face afterwards feels as if I have not put a razor anywhere near it...To get the real benefit from any injector I think one must let it freely dance all over your face "Every Which Way & Loose".... Like a Jazz Player & his Saxophone... Billy....
and I'd imagine those expectations have grown during your time with your passion for the hobby. That's probably natural, especially when you hunt down hardware that's so highly touted. Good on you that you recognize it. Spend some time with the wee beastie and see if you two are a match. Get your shaving-Zen back in sync and let the hardware flow...just like it used to before you got so jaded, uh, experienced. And if it doesn't work, I'm sure it won't be the first time that you haven't jibed with a highly sought after razor. YMMV right? But at least you will have experienced the ride. Cheers! RT
