Cartridge razors use a cartridge design - where the blades are housed in a plastic unit designed to be removed and replaced on a reusable handle. As Saad mentioned, some more recent disposable designs blur the lines somewhat: the M3 and Fusion disposables actually use M3 and Fusion cartridges on disposable handles. One could actually remove the heads and use them on other handles. But the heads on the Good News and Bic are not able to be repurposed. They can't be considered cartridge razors in any real sense. To clarify using your M-1 Garand/AK-47 example, I'm not saying disposable razors aren't razors, any more than I would say an M-1 Garand isn't a weapon. I'm saying disposable razors are not cartridge razors. I don't think any firearms enthusiast would make the mistake of saying an M-1 Garand is a magazine-fed weapon. A related questions is whether certain disposables shave like similar cartridge designs, and therefore can be used to evaluate whether or not you like that cartridge design. The GN is patterned after the Trac II, and arguably gives a pretty good indication of what a Trac II shaves like. Ironically, the Bic is really closer to a DE or SE, and can't really be likened to any modern cart.
@Sabre and @Jerry-built Hustler : If you have shaved with single bladed wilkinson sword bonded cartridge razor, do you think bic single blade disposable can be considered/categorised as its disposable version? I'm sorry if the question is stupid .
I have bought the three and four bladed Bic Cart Systems, but I wouldn't touch a single or twin blade Bic. I have many Bonded razors, but I haven't used one. The Bonded is meant to be very close to a Schick Injector and the Bic is meant to be very close to garbage .... The last time I used a Bic single or twin blade I looked like Freddy Krueger was learning to shave
Ironically, injector razors give me a horrible shave. But the single Bic razors give me decent passable shaves. Nothing however comes close to a DE razor with my favorite blades (Personna Lab, Med Prep, SuperMax Titanium.) That's just me though. My dad says that DE razors don't work on his neck, so he uses a Mach III.
Not a stupid question...just delving into the deeper realms of shaving esoterica. That's why I said a Bic can't really be likened to any *modern* cart. I think you could say a Bic disposable is similar to a WS Bonded cart, but those carts aren't in production any more. As such, I didn't want to muddy the waters with a comparison to them. Plus, considering they're from different manufacturers, there's no way to determine from a Bic whether one would have liked a WS Bonded*. For instance, Kerry had a rotten shave using the Kroger-brand Atra knockoffs, but he gets good results with the Gillette version. *For the record, I haven't shaved with one.
I actually was intrigued by the dollar shave club commercials and I use cartridge razors on my body because I'm not comfortable enough with a DE to move away from my face yet. And so I got a 4 pack of their 3 blade cartridge. I decided to test it and the shaving butter sample pack they sent me on my face aswell and needless to say I had razor burn and ingrown hairs on my face for a few days. I will gladly stick to my DE on my face. However the blades do seem to do pretty well on the chest area. Not a bad deal for 6 dollars.
It is all about the technique. When I was a rookie in DE shaving, even Personna blades and feather popular razor would give me ingrown hair. Which is quite rare to read, isn't it?
Estate of retired Gillette employee being sold off and there are another five or so cased NIB special models that you just never see for sale (titanium, silver, etc) I picked one...and went with this one. The rest of the cases are all NIB and can be found here You quite honestly never see these editions as complete as these are. Really happy to have picked up at least one...
If only Gillette also kept on producing executive versions. Schick still is busy making special versions of their flagship razors, but the target audience is only people from otaku culture. Attack on titan Schick Hydro 5
So, for you guys that use carts, do you use the same technique that you would use for a DE/SE razor? That is, pressure, number of passes, direction of passes, etc.
In my case, its totally different. The amount of pressure varies from one model to another, I only do 2x WTG passes and DFS is my requirement for a good shave
Gratz I was considering it but then cheapened out and got the gold one sans pen. Sweet looking, rather rare sets
With the MR3 I use light pressure. The handle is as heavy as some DE's. I use it with the head unlocked and thus let it control the shave angle. The shaves come out smooth and irritation free. Clayton
There was a moment...when I saw them all being listed...that I considered getting them all and having a small Sensor-shrine...but then I slapped myself real hard and just got one
