I had a slow afternoon and smoked a couple of Kaywoodie pipefuls of a shag Virginia. Noticed that it's almost time to pare down the cake on it. Its been a great value.

Taking a look now to see what looks good for evening pipe....

Tonight I had some Comoy's Cask #1 in my Roma Zulu. I really love this tobacco, probably my favorite Non-Aromatic.

Indeed. Have to say the Comoy's is my favorite, but the others I have (Mac Baren Latakia Flake, John Bull, Sutliff PS: Old San Fransisco, etc) are all good in my book too. I'm gonna have to grab some Comoy's bulk.

MO Meerschaum makes good pipes, especially for the price. I tend not to buy cob pipes, but the few MO cobs I've owned have been great pipes. Right now I have a Great Dane "Spool", and it's a great smoker. I use it as a work or yard pipe, and am seriously thinking about getting a couple more.

As to the Dunhill Nightcap, I haven't yet tried it, but as a Latakia Blend, it's on my to try list. It has a decent amount of Latakia, as well as both Flue and Sun cured Virginias and some Perique, which I believe would put it in the Balkan style. By the sounds of it, it should be a good tobacco. But I'm a bit of a Latakia fiend ever since I tried it; and everyone has different taste. Let us know how it is though. Hopefully it's to your liking! :)

It's a bit warm here- so I probably will stick to a VaPer tonight. Shaping up to be Fillmore in a Lasse Skovgaard blowfish. Accompanied by a Moscow mule.

Erik Redd Lizabeth, baby, I'm comin' to join ya.

I think I'll go on the back patio and have a bowl of Orlik GS in the new Stanwell, instead of watching the Republican debate. I know I'll be a lot calmer at the end of it.

Is this the G.L. Pease Fillmore? As someone that primarily leans to Virginia/VaPer blends, I'd be interested in your take on this blend.

I like VaPers, but sometimes the Perique can be overdone a little. As far as Pease blends, I've tried Abingdon, a fairly stout latakia dominant Balkan, and Haddo's Delight, a VaPer with unflavored cavendish and some burley. Both were toward the strong side for me, and Haddo's Delight really hit me hard with nicotene.

It sounds like you are a Latakia guy!

Orlik GS is better than television in general. I have a new Stanwell that I am about to dedicate to Orlik GS.

When it comes to aromatics, what have you liked the most?

How strong was the Latakia in the MacBaren Flake?

Burley disagreeing with you has been the trend I notice. The only Pease I've tried is Jack Knife Plug. I like burley, but it was too much for me. He has a reputation for making quite stout blends.

Chris, I've read somewhere that Jack Knife Plug is perhaps one of Pease's strongest blends. I agree with you based on my limited experience that Pease leans to the strong side.

You know, I generally like burley on occasion, but it does seem to have more nic. I would really like to find a Virginia/burley blend without the hard nic kick. I've given a fair amount of thought to trying Solani 660 Silver Flake, classified as a Virginia blend, but with the addition of some Kentucky. Reading the reviews on Tobacco Reviews, it seems that the Kentucky (fire cured burley) is added in some moderation versus a heavy hand, just enough to provide a little spice without the use of Perique. If anyone can recommend a Virginia/burley blend that isn't a nic bomb, let me know.

Now with Haddo's, it is quite possible that when I was trying it before, I was puffing a bit too much on it. I recall having a few bowls while working around in my basement garage; clenching a pipe while working can lead to excessive and steady puffing, if you aren't careful. And that, versus sipping, can bring on the vitamin N quicker and in greater quantity, or so I believe. Perhaps I should give it another try, but I'm really liking the sound of Solani Silver Flake.

I've smoked 660, and the KY is present, but not dominant, and Virginia is the main flavor profile.

Orlik Golden Mixture! It has unflavored burley black cavendish in condimental amounts, white burley to add smoke volume and about 90% VA broken Flake. Just barely stronger than Golden Sliced.

I just remembered I have an unopened tin of Golden Mixture that I bought a couple of years ago at one of The Briary's annual pipe events. I might have to break that out before long. I like the profile of 660, plus I'm intrigued by the Kentucky versus typical burley. The downside of Silver Flake is it's a bit pricy. Not the most I've ever paid, but pricey.

Went to the doc yesterday. LH sinus completely blocked. Got a couple of shots, antibiotics, prednisone pack in addition to the shot, and something for cough. Already feeling much better.

Awesome! That's the steroids shrinking everything down. 2-3 more days you'll feel better once the antibiotic has done its real work. Don't stress your sinus with smoke though, if it was infected it needs to heal. Stay hydrated! I know I say that all the time, but I am a dude from Huntsville with sinus issues, so I definitely feel your pain. Things are way better out here, it only rains 8-15 inches per warm season, so way less mold and pollen. The danger here is that the desert dry air 15% at 5200 feet will dry sinus tissues to the point that they literally crack open and bleed, and infections happen that way too. But overall, it's way better.

I'd rate it at I guess a medium strong. The Latakia is definitely front and center in the mix, but it's quite mellow really. Plenty of smokiness, but not too strong.
