I'm too cheap to use money . Found nickel and quarter sizes of cheap wooden disks ~1mm and 2mm thick at the local hardware store. Works a charm.
Since Mike ( @entropy1049 ) enabled me lent me one of his fine J-West style razors, I was compelled to acquire a similar one—a Takehana Feon 172 off of ebay. Although the price was right, it did have some cosmetic issues. The pivot point and blade toe both had some evident active rust, and on both sides of the scales, someone had carved a series of Japanese symbols (previous owners name?). So I pulled the blade and gave it a good cleaning and compound treatment on the buffers to remove all rust and remove any slight pitting. I hand-sanded the scales (400grit >12kGrit micro mesh); re-pinned the pivot point and give it all a good polish. Hones: Naniwa SS 1k to 12k; finishing laps on the Apache strata. HHT4 result…. All purdied up! Great near-BBS shave!

9/18/2015 Single Edge September! Frozen Friday! Prep: Hot shower with Neutrogena Face Wash with menthol, home made PSO Razor: Cobra Classic, Wade & Butcher Bow straight razor Blade: Feather Professional (10) Brush: Turkish #6 Soap: Chiseled Face - Cryogen After: Home made ASB, Osage Rub after shave Cologne: Midnight In Paris It is Frozen Friday! The #6 brush did a good job whipping the Cryogen into a nice and freezing lather. The Cobra and the W&B did a great job removing the stubble. The Osage Rub and the Midnight In Paris were a nice finish for this Darn Fine Shave +. Have a blessed day!
Sorry no pic today. I left my camera at work. Nice shave today with a Spencer, Hibbart and Bartlet OVB (Our Very Best), Oxford and Cambridge and my go to boar. Have a good one.
Bloody Fantastic job on the ol' FEON Kevin! Based on what you paid for it coupled with the fine work you've done here, I'll expect to see more fine J-Wests in your SSotD posts!
Thanks Mike. This was one of those situations where evident flaws in razor were NOT so evident in the auction photos or description. Seller: "Razor is dirty with age." It wasn't until I received it and held the razor that these became evident. Not sure why razor owners feel the need to carve words into their razor scales...on both sides! Photo from the auction....(although NOW I can see some of the 'carvings' in the scales, they were not so apparent first glance. The pivot point was really gunked up. Buyer Beware!...sometimes. Turned into a really fine shaver, however! Enhanced photo:
Apparently, I am one of the lucky ones. The razor I purchased from this seller arrived better than described. There's currently a hate thread running on SRP about this seller that is chock full of people who are ready to burn him in effigy (since he lives in Japan and is relatively difficult to access ) who've received some pretty cruddy razors, and that possibly he is "doctoring" photos in his sales listings. For example, the chipping at the heal is readily apparent in your "Before" photos, and nonexistent in the seller photos. Bait and Switch is another possibility. At any rate, I think it's safe to say, we shouldn't look seriously at any of his gear unless it's ridiculously inexpensive.
I usually remove it in post-production (tape residue, dust , water streaks, stray hair in the soap... ) Love the shape of that razor, by the way...
As a Mac newb, given the absence of MS Paintbrush (lol, I know...) I lack the tech savvy to perform such operations...I do have Fire Alpaca I've been experimenting with. The Chevalier is an extraordinary shaver. The fact that it survived "The Purge" speaks volumes for it.
Fritz Bracht Solingen "Tennis" razor 13/16 # 55 - If I had to give up all my razors but one, this one would stay Caties Bubbles " Midnight Dreary" - one of my all time favorites Brushcraft handle with a FS 24 mm extra density silvertip - love it Caties Bubbles Le Piment de le Vie AS = it's ok, not spectacular Soap Commander " Love" balm - great stuff here
vintage shave with an old Wostenholm gold frame back. Plenty of mileage on this old girl (see the hone wear where the Wostenholm stamp on the spine is all but gone), but still holds a Killer edge…
