I liked that nat sherman 509 i tried today, some of the lane stuff (captian black wasnt great for me) some of the house mixes at the shop and erinmore flake that i let air out a few days....calmed it down and was better than the first day i bought it
Those of you with an m.m. cobb....what is it dedicated to? Ive got one briar dedicated to the AROs so i dont want to put the dunhill i bought in it. Ill pick up another briar but it might be a month or so....should i go ahead and put the english in the cobb?
Erinmore was of of the first flakes I ever tried. I mostly smoke Virginia and Virginia/Perique, though there are burleys I really like. 509 seems like a full cavendish style premium blend. I find that most pipe tobacco benefits from drying out a bit, especially flake cuts and cavendish style.
i would say just do it! It won't affect the following aromatics for more than one bowl. Sip the Dunhill slowly to avoid bite. It is a true classic in the world of english style blends.
None of my pipes are dedicated to anything really. What pipe I smoke depends on my weekly rotation. Different pipe for each day so they have enough time to rest properly. But as far as tobacco, I smoke whatever I'm in the mood for at the time. I do recommend that you clean your pipes thoroughly say, once a week. That will keep them in good shape and keep them tasting right.
It is indeed the Pease Fillmore. I like it quite a bit -very straightforward VaPer-- perhaps a bit light on the Perique front to my tastes. Fair warning, I must say I'm pretty resistant to nicotine. To date, my favorite VaPers are Haddo's and C&D's Exhausted Rooster. PS luxury bullseye flake is also a close runner up; It also tends to be a little more mild on the nicotine front IMO. Truth be told- I tend to enjoy English, oriental, and Balkan blends, but I tend to keep a VaPer or two open as a change of pace. I am one of those guys that tends to lean more heavily in the latter category when the temps go up. Cool autumn nights are just made for Latakia though.
That seems to be the trend with a lot of latakia lovers. PS bullseye is pretty high on my list, although I made the mistake one time of stuffing two flakes in a larger bowled Neerup pipe. I was pretty woozy after that. I like to add a little McClellan 5100 Red Cake or PS 701 Virginia, in about a 3 to 1 ratio.
Cobbs aren't as easily ghosted as briar pipes, so I'm not sure I would worry about dedicating a Cobb to any type of tobacco. One thing about cobbs, you really don't need a carbon cake in it and I've read some people recommend a paper towel reaming of the bowl after each smoke to prevent the cake. I do that more often than not. I like how cobbs smoke, but I don't like the plastic bits. I know you can get replacement stems in vulcanite or lucite, I've just never done it. I have a natural Corn Cobb Snob with a vulcanite stem. It's a great pipe, and smokes exceedingly cool.
Thanks, it's good to feel like I'm back amongst the living! Definitely not smoking a pipe for a few more days.
I recommend Orlik Golden Sliced, it's my "stuck on an island forever" tobacco. Escudo is a classic Virginia/perique. I also really like Solani 656 Aged Burley Flake. In bulk, Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake is a must try. If I want an aromatic, I actually like Lane Burley-Light-without-a-bite or "BLWB" in bulk. Peterson University Flake is a top notch Virginia/Burley blend. Bell's Three Nuns is a classic Virginia, perique and dark fired Kentucky, also a true classic. These are just things I have enjoyed, but taste in tobacco is a subjective thing. I started on aromatics years ago, but as I got older, I started to seek more natural "to the leaf and soil" kinda blends. Have fun exploring!

I havent smoked it but i popped the tin and i did not like the tin note....i was pretty dissapointed so im going to let it breathe before i give it a shot. A crude comparison for me was that it smelled like coppenhagen....if it tastes like the tin note then i might smell a hint of PIF in there
What you are likely reacting to is the Latakia in the Dunhill. I have lost my taste for most Latakia, it's too muddy and smoky for me., and tends to dominate blends.
Pipe O'the Night Friday Doubleheader This is the Kaywoodie I often reference. It's absolutely one of my best smokers, and without a doubt the best $24 I ever spent on a mass market pipe. Beautiful cake, dries quickly, metal fittings allow for hot disassembly. The bowl is probably just short of group 3, and perfectly holds a half-flake of Stokkebye bulk Navy, shown in picture. I love this pipe, it never disappoints in any way.
I can't remember who, but it seems like I remember someone on this thread wanting a bulldog style pipe. Pipes and Cigars has Royal Dutch pipes on sale for $69, and there are a couple of nice looking Bulldogs in this line. No idea about the quality, but they look nice versus some cheap looking bulldogs I've seen. http://www.pipesandcigars.com/pipes/89025/royal-dutch-pipes/
It was about 74 today. It will be 45 or so by dawn's light. I don't smoke in the house per se, but in cold weather I am able to heat my garage to about 60-65 degrees. I have a workbench area with an office chair and articulated lamp and thick rubber floor mats. Put NFL live on the iPad and I'm set.
Although I'm curently on a straight pipe kick, the Royal Dutch bent bulldog really looks nice. I posted a night or two ago about wanting to try a VaBur blend. I guess I should have checked my inventory! Chris suggested Orlik Golden Mixture, which I remembered I have on hand. Dug around a bit more and found a tin of Esoterica Tilbury, which is a Virginia/burley blend! One of my all time favorites that I can no longer find locally or on the net is Esoterica Dorchester. I remembered it being a VaPer, but looking at P&C (not in stock), it is actually a VaPerBur. Never got a big nic hit with it. I'll smoke down some of my open stock, then the Golden Mixture or Tilbury will be opened up.
